Well, Halloween lovers, you no longer have an excuse. Sorry!
There are all kinds of exciting varieties of vegetables and herbs out there that come in black and purple varieties, and spring is a perfect time to learn what exists so you can try out one or two in your garden. I mean, wouldn’t it be fun to serve up purple french fries or black carrots come October?
Here are a few vegetables and herbs you can plant in a Halloween-themed garden this spring.
8 Vegetables and Herbs to Grow in Your Halloween Garden
1. Black Beauty Tomatoes
If you love tomatoes, you’ll likely love the dark, rich flavor of the black beauty. These veggies are full of anthocyanin, the same antioxidant found in blueberries and blackberries. Wouldn’t these look gorgeous on a salad in October? BUY SEEDS HERE
2. Purple Teepee Beans
Fan of green beans? Then you might enjoy their purple cousin! These bean plants grow quickly and are plentiful and, curiously enough, they turn green when cooked. (That’s a fun bit of magic for your kiddos.) BUY SEEDS HERE
3. Black Corn
This is an heirloom variety of corn that produces jet black corn kernels. This variety is great for making colorful cornmeal. BUY SEEDS HERE
4. Purple Potatoes
I had no idea purple potatoes existed until I ran across them in a grocery store one day. They’re certainly an easy way to get color on your plate – esp. using my spooky sprouts and spuds recipe! BUY SEEDS HERE
5. Baby Boo Pumpkins
Okay, yes – technically this is a fruit but I had to include at least one pumpkin variety in this post! I’ve had my fair share of pumpkin growing adventures over the past two years, but this Baby Boo variety, in particular, would look gorgeous in your garden mixed in with all these spooky veggies…and as part of your Halloween decor come fall! 6. Pumpkin on a Stick
If you’re a Trader Joe’s shopper, you might recognize this unusual plant as they carry it each fall. And while it looks like a bunch of tiny pumpkins, this is actually an ornamental eggplant from Asia. While it is edible, most gardeners seem to use this beauty as a botanical conversation piece. 7. Purple Basil
Basil is one of my favorite fresh herbs, and I’ve been known to stick my fave (no, not my nose – my FACE) into bundles at the grocery store from time to time. Caprese salad is a summertime favorite for this ghoul, and purple basil is just the thing to make it spooky! BUY SEEDS HERE
8. Black Carrots
And finally, we round out this post with the gorgeous black carrot. These beauties come from the Middle East. Wouldn’t these be fun to roast with traditional orange carrots and serve up for Halloween? BUY SEEDS HERE

Chelsea
I’m actually surprised with how many of these I have actually eaten! OoO The black carrots are surprisingly tasting for their color. Two must tries from this list for me would have to be that purple basil and the black beauty tomatoes. I love tomatoes of all colors and sizes and mixing those with the basil and some fresh mozzarella would make the perfect caprese!
