Each year when spring rolls around, I wish I had a green thumb.

But alas, I’m a serial plant killer. I consistently kill cacti, which should be the easiest things to keep alive since they require so little attention. I’ve now had two failed years of backyard pumpkin patch growing, and I used to joke that I’m even the girl who killed an aloe plant…until I learned it likely died after absorbing a TON of bad energy an ex-friend sent my way.
Sigh.
It also doesn’t help that I live in a space with zero outdoor space, so I’m stuck trying to maintain the heartiest of house plants that can withstand my abuse. (Pothos is the only thing I haven’t killed.)
But my gardening woes don’t keep me from dreaming of someday having a garden full of gorgeous flowers, wandering pumpkin vines and black tomatoes – oh yes, that exists my spooky little friend!
Today I’m sharing 7 plants I’d totally grow in a Halloween garden in hopes that you’ll find one or two to try this spring.
7 Plants to Grow in Your Halloween Garden
1. Black Coral Elephant Ear
Elephant ear plants always feel a little generic to me, but when you turn them black? Now you’re talking! These are perfect to plant in your backyard near a pool, wait for them to grow and then host a spooky pool party at the height of summer! BUY A LIVE PLANT HERE
2. Black Heart Vine
How perfect are these black heart-shaped leaves? This vine is in the ipomoea family and is perfect for ground cover, so if you have a large garden or flower bed, plant these black beauties! BUY SEEDS HERE
3. Black Mondo Grass
Imagine your entire backyard covered in black grass. What a dream! While mondo grass might not be practical for an entire backyard, this lush groundcover will make a statement – plus it flowers in summer and produces purple berries in the fall. Perfect for a little extra Halloween decor! BUY A LIVE PLANT HERE
4. Doll’s Eye
Ever feel like your garden is watching you? 😉 This plant’s name is pretty self-explanatory and typically grows in the Midwest and Eastern United States. And as an added bonus…the entire plant is poisonous to humans. What more could you want from a plant in your spooky garden? BUY SEEDS HERE
5. Ghost Plant
This one certainly checks the unusual box for a garden! The ghost plant, also called Indian Pipe or the corpse plant, is entirely white due to its lack of chlorophyll and topped by one single white flower. It often grows in dark, dense areas of vegetation, and it’s considered parasitic to boot! BUY SEEDS HERE
6. Sensitive Plant
The sensitive plant might not look spooky on the surface, but one touch and this plant will recoil. While many plants grow so gradually, we don’t notice, this one will come alive right before your eyes! BUY LIVE PLANTS HERE
7. Spider Plant
This easy-to-care-for house plant is called a spider plant for the offshoots – they look like spiders springing from the plant and can be cut and repotted to grow new plants. And this baby is SO easy to care for even this ghoul hasn’t killed the one my mom gave me earlier this year! BUY A LIVE PLANT HERE
