Making my own spooky Springoween terrarium has been on my DIY list for years.

Thanks to this Instagram Live and follow-up tutorial from Andrew and Devin over at Your Best Halloween Ever, I am now the proud owner of my very own!

And YES. This is indeed a YOGA SKELETON you see in there. I decided to embrace the Halloween decor trend I simply do not understand for this particular DIY…mostly for a laugh. (And because who doesn’t want to zen out in a cemetery? This ghoul certainly does!)
While we made these last fall for Halloween, I think a spooky little Springoween terrarium is the perfect project for right now! And a great excuse to grab some of those darling miniatures you probably see every year at the craft stores and think, “I should make something with those…”
How I Made a Springoween Terrarium

Supplies:
- Clear glass or plastic jar (what I used)
- Dirt
- Moss
- Rocks
- Miniature figurines

How to assemble your terrarium:
Start by cleaning your container, either by washing or with glass cleaner. If you wash it, be sure to try it by hand with a soft towel to avoid water spots. Allow the container to dry completely before adding your dirt.

I used dirt from outside my parents’ house (I made this while in Wisconsin last fall) because it’s free and it was there. I like being able to see the layer of dirt along the bottom to give it a little interest. It also gives me something to push my figures into that will hold them in place.

Next, I dropped in a layer of craft moss to cover the top of my dirt. Mine was a bit more rustic (similar), while my mom used something a bit more green (similar) for her terrarium and mounded up the dirt for her witch fairy to stand on. (This is a cool find for options too!)
She also added in a few rocks she’d picked up while out and about. I love the idea of incorporating natural elements you have around you!

Place your figures around the terrarium. To stead them, push them into the dirt slightly.
My two cents: when it comes to figurines, less is more. Pick 1-2 items to be your focal points. For my terrarium, that was the tree and the skeleton. For my mom’s terrarium, that was her fairy witch and well.
By the way, our figures were the Ashland brand from Michaels. (More options should populate on that page the closer we get to Halloween season.) If you’re making a terrarium out-of-season, Etsy is a great spot for locating unique Halloween miniatures, and I’ve already done the search for you!

Then add in 2-3 other miniature items for accents. I dropped in a fence along the back of my jar, then added in headstones and pumpkins. My mom added her broomstick fence and tree.

If you want to accent your jar, you could add a strip of Halloween ribbon to the top or even a bit of Halloween washi tape. We opted to keep our jars simple without decor.

Once your terrarium is assembled, find a spot to display it! Mine currently resides in my office on top of a shelf. My mom displayed hers on her piano during October, then packed it away for next year.
Packing tip: if you are using your terrarium seasonally, tuck some tissue paper into the jar to keep your figures in place while in storage.

What theme would you pick for a Springoween terrarium?
I love a good cemetery any time of the year, and I think my mom’s fairy witch is darling. Let me know what theme you would pick for your terrarium in the comments! And don’t forget to tag me on Instagram if you make this DIY – I love seeing how your DIYs turn out.
Happy haunting,

They are great for a group activity! So cool. Can you put like a Venus fly trap or two inside?
Miranda | Spooky Little Halloween
Sure! You would need to make sure your base (soil/rocks/moss/etc.) is the right set up for a fly trap, but that would be cool to see!
