How to Make Valoween Cupcake Toppers

I have an embarrassing secret to share about this blog post: it's two years old.

Yup, you read that right.

Two.

Years.

Old.

🤦

I made these cupcakes back in February of 2019…and they never got posted. Then February 2020 rolled around, and I spent the first full week of the month in St. Louis for a work conference, followed by a weekend having some Halloween fun with Andrew and Devin from yourbesthalloweenever.com and, once again, these didn’t get posted.

I couldn’t let another Valoween pass by without sharing this because I was SO excited about these cupcake toppers I made for you guys! So here they are:

If you’re like me, you might hit up those post-Halloween sales and grab things like baked good box kits. (It’s a serious weakness…)

And then January or February roll around, you find yourself missing Halloween and thinking, what could I do to cheer myself up?

My answer: Valoween Cupcakes! They’re cute. They’re festive. And who doesn’t love a heart-eyed jack-o-lantern smiling at them?

What you’ll need:

  • Cake mix
  • Frosting
  • Valentine’s Day sprinkles
  • Halloween cupcake papers
  • Halloween washi tape
  • Toothpicks
  • Scissors
  • Cardstock
  • Printer
  • My free Valoween cupcake toppers

How to Make Your Valoween Cupcake Toppers:

First, you’ll want to make your cupcakes and frosting according to either your favorite recipe or your Halloween box mix. Did you know you can find these on Amazon year-round? Just don’t let that out-of-season price scare you to death…

And you’ll absolutely want some Halloween cupcake papers (I like these or these!) to keep things festive.

Since our cupcakes are Halloweeny, top them with Valentine’s Day sprinkles for a little love. This is the mix I bought from Neon Yolk for this post, but these sprinkles are similar.

Next, you’ll want to download and print my single page for Valoween cupcake toppers. I put a lot of variety in the color choices with these cuties so you could use a little of everything or stick to a specific color palette.

My favorite is the first line with all the pink and purple candies inside the pumpkin pail! (But those pink jack’s are a close second…)

By the way, I recommend printing your toppers on 80-pound cardstock to make them sturdy.

Then grab some scissors and cut out your pumpkin pails. You don’t need to cut out the space between the handle and pumpkin pail – we’ll use that for attaching the toothpicks and washi tape. (I’m not trying to enable you, but just in case you need some spooky washi tape…)

Why Halloween washi tape? Frankly, because I have a TON of it. And it will make your cuppies a little more fun from the backside. (Need more ideas for using Halloween washi tape creatively? Check out this post.)

Once your pumpkin pails are cut out, use a small strip of Halloween washi tape to attach a toothpick to the back.

And voila! You have your very own Valoween cupcake toppers. Super easy and cute, right?

When your cupcakes have cooled, you can frost and sprinkle them.

Then just add those toppers for a little Valoween fun!

How are you celebrating Valoween this year?

Perhaps by making yourself a batch of spooky cupcakes? If you do make these, be sure to tag me in your Instagram posts!

Stay tuned because I have more Valoween fun coming your way soon.

xo,
