One of my favorite things about the Halloween and horror community is seeing everyone's creativity.
From musicians and filmmakers to artists and writers, our space on the Internet has a bit of everything. I always love finding new creatives in our space, and author, musician and entrepreneur (just to name a few of her titles!) Coral Isabella Aurora is no exception.
She is the author of the indie horror/comedy “The Teenager’s Guide to Surviving a Horror Film” and the designer behind Peace & Wolf, an ethical apparel shop that donates a portion of the proceeds from every sold. Get to know her in today’s Q&A!
Q&A with Horror Author Coral Isabella Aurora

Tell us how you got started writing!
Coral: I’ve wanted to be a singer, musician, and author since six years old. I started writing small stories about my animals at seven-years-old. I used to create journals as a child, sewing together paper and gluing on covers. I’ve always loved the smell of paper, and I have collected a worrying amount of scrapbook paper over the years. I wrote my first novel at fourteen in 2008.
“The Teenager’s Guide to Surviving a Horror Film” is a blend of horror, YA and comedy – what draws you to these genres?
Coral: I love that, although meant for a younger audience, YA storylines are often complex. Plus, I love writing about things I enjoy, so I can share my passion with others. One of my favorite things to do is make fun of horror films, so I thought it would make a wonderful story.

What makes this the perfect read for the Halloween season?
Coral: This hilarious story is a perfect addition to any chilled autumn day with a cup of pumpkin spice coffee. Halloween favorite ghouls fill the pages, and Jacqueline’s sarcastic voice adds tongue-in-cheek humor. This tale tells of clumsy zombies, fluffy-wuffy werewolves, emotional vampires, and more.
What is your favorite thing about October?
Coral: EVERYTHING. I love the leaves, hoodie season, fuzzy socks, brisk air, and the crisp sound of crunching leaves underneath my feet. My favorite autumn activities are corn mazes, haunted houses, Halloween parties, and curling up on the couch to watch scary movies. Candy apples, pumpkin spice chai tea lattes, apple spice donuts, pumpkin pie, and apple cider are my favorite goodies. I also enjoy watching my brother play horror games—I MAKE HIM PLAY—and jumping when something scary happens. It’s a beautiful time to read, take hikes, and enjoy life.
As a horror writer, who are some of your favorite authors you look up to?
Coral: I have favorite books, not favorite authors. I don’t enjoy reading horror as much as I love writing suspense and dark tales. I did love R.L. Stine’s Goosebumps growing up. Does that count?
Any more horror/Halloween books planned for the future?
Coral: Yes! I already have a list of books to write for this comedy series. You can expect at least two more horror comedies in the future. I also have a YA thriller coming out early next year called “Breaking Free: God’s Island”. This new book is about an island ruled by a cult free of government rule. The main character, Chammie, must play a dangerous game of truth and lies with her father to survive and save her ostracized gay best friend.
I have another horror/mystery book in the works, which is going to be scarier than any story I’ve written yet. Plus, you can expect a dark fantasy series in the next couple of years. I am especially excited about writing the dark fantasy book and can’t wait to get started. This series will have about five books in total. The environment, storyline and characters match the theme of my music album, which I’m planning to debut next year.

You also run a shop called Peace & Wolf focused on selling ethical apparel…and has a few spooky designs – tell us a bit about that!
Coral: I feel that animals are the soul, the spirt, of the Earth. Their beauty is mesmerizing, and I can’t imagine a life where the wild no longer exists. My goal is to donate enough money with Peace & Wolf apparel that I can make a true difference in the world.
Every purchase from Peace & Wolf donates to Potter League for Animals until March 2021. We donate $1 for every book, beanie, face covering and mug sold. We donate $5 each for everything else. In April 2021, we’ll choose another organization to donate to.
Peace & Wolf is a fashion line that celebrates both inner and outer beauty. Every product is ethically manufactured and sourced from companies that adhere to codes of conduct that prohibit sweatshops. We also offer soft, USA-made tops and Canadian-made leggings, skirts, totes, beanies, face coverings and scarves.
Our sustainable clothing collection includes ecopoly, organic cotton, recycled, hemp, bamboo, and eco fleece. Every t-shirt and sweatshirt is printed with nontoxic water-based ink.
I create all the artwork for Peace & Wolf. I love sharing my passion with others and use my quirky personality to make unforgettable designs. You will find lots of animal puns in my artwork, and new collections are added every season.
I truly imagine that Peace & Wolf is, and will grow to be, a brand for everyone that loves wildlife and finds the word woman synonymous with free. “Where Woman Embraces Wild”. All women are free and natural, beautiful the way they are. We should wear products as naturally beautiful as us and clothes that express our joy for life.
What’s next for you?
Coral: I also have a young adult fantasy comedy debuting this November. It’s called “The Teenager’s Guide to Surviving a Fairy Tale” and is the second book to my comedy series. This unconnected sequel has some Easter eggs from the horror comedy, which I’m sure fans of the first book will love.
Nine teenagers are shanghaied into a fantasy world when a lonely, bullied 13-year-old genius makes a wish for a fairy tale surrounded by friends at senior prom. While trying to find their way home, each experience mistaken identity with an iconic fairy tale character. Although hilarious, this powerful story has a strong message about bullying, diversity and overcoming fear.
Besides writing books, I also compose music. I am a singer/songwriter who creates music with violins, cellos, violas, harps, concert bass drums, pianos and vocals. Look up Coral Isabella Aurora on YouTube to listen to a cover song of “Paint it Black”! I am planning to release a music album in 2021, so stay tuned.

Mini Review: “The Teenager’s Guide to Surviving a Horror Film”
Coral was kind enough to send a copy of her novel my way, and it’s been the perfect escape this October. I am slowly on my way to becoming a horror movie fan, as you might know, but enjoying seeing the tropes of horror films put to use in this novel has been a blast. Each chapter starts with a rule and unfolds in a way that shows how horror characters so often ignore the basic tenants they should follow to make it to the end.
“The Teenager’s Guide to Surviving a Horror Film” is a light-hearted, quick read that even non-horror fans like myself will enjoy – and what’s better to put you in the Halloween spirit than the tale of a haunted house that devours teenagers on October 31?
