Who doesn't love getting mail these days?

Seriously. There have been some days in 2020 where checking my mailbox has been the highlight of my day. (But that’s also true on a normal day in a normal year.) There’s a warm fuzzy feeling that happens when somethings besides marketing mail, junk mail or bills pop up in your mailbox.
And I love it even more when it’s Halloween mail! While we might not be able to gather with our favorite Halloween friends this year, you can definitely still send them a little something to let you know you’re thinking of them…with a Halloween scare package. (Basically, a care package but it’s way more fun when you’re a Halloween blogger to call it a scare package, okay? Okay.)
Here are a few items (+ some shopping links!) to get you started.
17 Items for a Halloween Scare Package

Halloween Cards
Every good scare package needs a beautiful Halloween card! Look for them in stores (dollar stores are my fave spot to grab them for cheap!), make your own or support a creator on Etsy. I’m digging this set!

Halloween Candy
Next on the must-have list – a little Halloween candy! The weirder, more off-beat the better, like these chocolate eyeballs. You could, of course, grab a bag of their favorites or even one of these new offerings from Hershey’s.
If it’s early in the season, keep in mind temperatures so your scare package recipient doesn’t end up with melted candy.

Spooky Movies
Who doesn’t love having a new Halloween movie in their hands to watch? Grab a physical copy of your favorite to include – or your favorite spooky cartoon, like I’ve included above.

A Creepy Book
We’ve got plenty of suggestions for you over in The Halloween Book Club! You can go classic, with something like “The Halloween Tree” or “Something Wicked This Way Comes“, both by Ray Bradbury. Another recent fave of mine: “Hex” by Thomas Olde Heuvelt.
Want one that shares the history of Halloween? Honestly, a lot of them are pretty dry so I always recommend “Halloween” by Silver Ravenwolf. Need more ideas? Check out this post.

Halloween T-shirt
There are SO many amazing Halloween T-shirts out there these days. I’ve got a list of favorites here. I also just bought two from A Black Star over on Etsy that I can’t wait to get. The Halloween Shirt Company is another new favorite. (Stay tuned to my Halloween hunting series for more on them soon!)

Halloween Accessories
Accessories, whether it’s a piece of jewelry, an enamel pin, etc., are great – and smaller – items to tuck into a scare package. Murderous Jewels always has something gorgeously spooky available in her shop. You can also check out my Halloween enamel pin collection if you need some shopping ideas.

Halloween Craft Kit
Dollar stores and the dollar section at Target are great spots to look for these! And the perfect activity to do while watching the Halloween movie you included.

Halloween Keychain
Here’s another one that’s small, simple and fun. I especially LOVE the blind pack keychains you can pick up at Spirit Halloween. Salem here came from the “Hocus Pocus” keychains, but they also have “Nightmare Before Christmas“, “Ghostbusters” or even classic horror characters.

Small Halloween Decor
Dollar stores or the dollar section at Target is also great for small pieces of Halloween decor. Kitchen towels, small signs or plush decor are great items for dropping in the mail.

Spooky Toys
Sending a scare package to a kiddo? Don’t forget to include a Halloween toy or two! I love these cat noses and temporary tattoos – another item to look for in dollar stores/sections.

Halloween Games
Did you know Halloween games are a thing? I shared a list last Halloween season. Clearing Coffins and Zombie Dice are two of my faves that are also easy to learn AND small/light enough to drop in a scare package.
You could also print out and mail a copy of my Tim Burton trivia or Halloween music bingo!

Pumpkins
Who wouldn’t love finding one of these Jack-Be-Little pumpkins tucked into their scare package with all their Halloween goodies?

Halloween Coloring Pages
Here’s one that won’t cost you anything to include! Earlier this year, several creatives in the Halloween community put together free coloring pages. Find them here.

Spooky Bath Bombs
I love bath bombs, so perhaps I’m a bit biased with this pick, but what a great way to treat someone to a little relaxation! The bath bombs pictured are from one of my favorite small businesses, Witch Baby Soap. You can also find more picks in this blog post.

Halloween Picture Frame
While you’re out Halloween hunting, keep an eye out for a cute Halloween frame! It’s a great way for families to keep track of costumes from year to year. (This frame came from Kohl’s…and includes a photo of me with my three childhood besties in our Harry Potter-themed costumes.)

Halloween Candles
I couldn’t overlook this one! Halloween lovers are candle lovers, and there are SO many amazing small businesses out there to shop with these days! A few of my faves: A to Z Candles, Lichen and Limestone, Storybook Candle Co. and The Smell of Fear.

Gift Cards
When all else fails…drop a gift card from their favorite store (or coffee shop for a pumpkin latte!) into the scare package so they can trick-or-treat themselves to something spooky.

Just in case you need it all in a nice, neat list!

Chavelle
I just did my first Halloween scare package as a thank you to my neighbor. I found a skull salt & pepper shaker that I included. I also included skull beer glasses, Halloween pajama pants, leggings, socks and a Halloween coffee mug… I have also included some of the things on your list like, a candle, candy, and a spooky Halloween card in between other things. It was fun making it & I know she’ll enjoy it as she loves Halloween as much as I do!

I love that, Chavelle! Glad you’ve already gotten a jump start on this idea. :)
Alison
It would depend who the scare package was for, but I think things like Halloween stationery would be fun too if you can find some. Pens, pencils, stickers, washi tape etc… I’d love seasonal make up or nail polish and lets not forget a Halloween themed shopper bag!
Miranda | Spooky Little Halloween
Yes! Love all of those ideas, Alison. :)
Jennifer
I’ll be sending a scare package to my sister and nephew. I’ll be including candy, some decorations and some ground maple coffee. I’ve found EOC Vermont Maple Bourbon coffee and it’s amazing, so my nephew will love it.

That is awesome, Jennifer!
Sara Hargis
Love these ideas!! Thanks for sharing. 🎃👻❤️
Susan
For children, I’m including all the gifts in a Trick or Treat pumpkin pail. Stuffing it with age appropriate gifts such as
Teenager- Skeleton gloves, candy, light up mask, favorite classic book, creepy crawly life size bugs to scare his friends
elementary age – cute stuffed bats , candy , books, tshirts. Can also add a cape of butterfly wings!
Have fun!!!

Great suggestions, Susan!
