Black Creatives in the Halloween & Horror Community

Who are the black creatives in the Halloween and horror community?

Black Lives Matter. If you’re looking for resources and ways to support, start here. List last updated July 28, 2020.

This was a question you guys asked me last week, and I was glad I wasn’t the only one looking at our online community and wondering too. Shortly after, several small businesses I follow started sharing lists and asking followers to tag their favorites on Instagram.

I’ve been trying to gather as many of these as possible to make a slightly more permanent list here on the blog. One thing I’ve noticed: many black creatives can be found in the goth and witch communities, esp. on Instagram, which has a lot of cross-over for Halloween and horror lovers.

I hope you’ll step with me over into these other spaces we occupy online to find new faves to fall in love with. (I certainly have – hello @mintfaery!)

Is this list exhaustive? Absolutely not. You’ll find a few additional threads to check out at the end of this post.

But like some of my other listicle posts, I will continue to update it as I find new people you should know. I encourage you to browse this list and give the creatives who resonate with you a follow!

Want to be added to the list? Just send me an email at hello@spookylittlehalloween.com with a link to your account, blog, shop or anything else you do online. I’d love to add you.

Black Creatives in the Halloween & Horror Community

Ashleeta / @ashleeta

Ashleeta is such a beautiful intersection of SO many things I know fellow Halloween lovers adore too: horror, vintage fashion, killer clothing and even a little burlesque dancing thrown in for good measure. Follow her over on Instagram.

Cheyenne Jazwise

If you love costumes and cosplay, Cheyenne is a must-follow. This Elvira look is amazing, but I also love her Storm, Princess Leia and Poison Ivy cosplays. Follow her on Instagram.

Empressri

Not only does this ghoul love Halloween, but she also shares some amazing goth/grunge makeup looks on Instagram. Want to learn how she does it and share your own? Check out her Facebook group!

Ever Endearing

Here’s one you guys suggested. If you’re a Disney fan and always on the hunt for new ears to wear to the parks, check out Ever Endearing! Camari offers more than just spooky designs, but I especially love this black, orange and white Halloween pair of ears.

Glam Goth Beauty

One spin through Glam Goth Beauty’s Instagram will have you making heart eyes. If their gorgeous, vibrant colors aren’t your everyday look consider shopping with them for your Halloween costume. Shop their site.

Goth in the Raw

Looking for an AMAZING vegan food resource? Goth in the Raw has been a favorite – and mouthwateringly gorgeous – follow on Instagram for me. Plus they are a member of The Samhain Society!

Gothic Lamb

If all your T-shirts are black, you’ll love the designs over at Gothic Lamb. This vampire girl is one of my faves, as is the creepy girls do it better tee. You can find their shop here, but be sure to follow them on Instagram too.

Graveyard Shift Sisters

Love horror? Then all the posts over at Graveyard Shift Sisters are absolutely worth a read. Some posts are thoughts on specific films. Others are a discussion about black females in horror as a whole. I promise you’ll learn something new and probably discover a film you haven’t seen yet.

Haus of Hoodoo

One of these days I’m going to make the short drive from Houston back over to New Orleans, and when I do…Haus of Hoodoo is the first stop on the list. I’ve always had a fascination with metaphysical shops and can’t wait to wander this one. Until then, we can shop online and give Jessyka a follow on Instagram.

The Hoodwitch

I’d be willing to bet if you’re already familiar with anyone on this list, it’s Bri. I ran across her in my search for more badass females to learn from about the witchy side of life. There is SO much to check out, but I recommend starting with her blog and her online shop. And for my fellow music lovers, you’ll want to give her Samhain/Halloween playlist a listen.

Jordan Fiction

“If Tim Burton & Walt Disney had a child” is how Jordan’s Instagram bio begins. He’s a musician who loves Halloween just as much as the rest of us. Give him a follow and check out his YouTube channel for more music…and scroll back to October for more gems like this photo above!

Josy / @josyness

Josy was a recommendation that came in almost immediately when I asked you guys for them – and I see why! I love seeing all her fun on Instagram, and she has some great YouTube videos from events around the Los Angeles area.

Larry West

Looking for a new artist to fall in love with? Larry West is your guy! There are a lot of amazing monsters haunting his Instagram, and you can find prints of his work over on his website. Happy shopping!

Marloween

Um, a ghoul who hangs out in cemeteries in Addams Family dresses? Hi, Marlee. Can we please be BFFs now? You guys will LOVE her Instagram account, and be sure to drop by her YouTube channel, Bitchcraft, as well!

Michelle Halloween

Hell yes to fellow Halloween/horror bloggers! Michelle Halloween is a writer, contributor to the podcast Creepy Kingdom and editor-in-chief of Rawl of the Dead Magazine…in addition to writing over at michellehalloween.com.

Mintfaery

If there was a perfect intersection of my love of pastels, alternative vibes and witchy goodness…it would 1000% be Mintfaery. I am obsessed with her entire feed. Follow her on Instagram, check out @mintcoven and drop by her YouTube channel to add a little magic to your day. (And THANK YOU to Aarrin for knowing me so well to share this one with me!)

Moonflesh

Lyla over at Moonflesh (such a great, descriptive name!) describes their self as a web weaver of embroideries with semi-precious stones. I call them a magic maker. How stunning is this bat? Pop over to their Instagram to check out all their work.

MorbidMeka

Meka is what my goth beauty dreams are made of. I love all the bold lip colors she uses in her looks, plus she is a music lover too. Learn more in this interview and give her a follow on Instagram.

Pottery Witch

Cool small biz alert! We all love mugs for our morning coffee and tea judging by how frequently I see them fly by on Instagram. Taylor’s shop, Pottery Witch, is full of gorgeous handmade designs. Her story of how she got started with her pottery is pretty cool too – read it here.

ShawnxThorne

If you love gorgeous jewelry, you’ll definitely want to follow ShawnxThorne on Instagram. In addition to pieces with gemstones, like the ones above, you’ll find some pieces with seriously witchy vibes.

Vampology

If you love all things goth, witchy and glam, you will love Danhell Purgatory over at @vampology on Instagram. She’s also a co-host of the Runes & Relics Podcast.

Ashley / @vendetta0881

Who ya gonna call when you need an awesome gender bender cosplay? Ashley over at @vendetta0881, of course! In addition to sharing awesome costumes, she’s a pass holder at Disney World (not nearly enough of those in my feed around Halloween time!) and a Daytona Beach Ghostbuster. I’ll let you explore that one for yourself. 😉

Wickergirl

Here’s another one for my horror lovers. Simret is a film producer, director and writer creating her own horror flicks! She also blogs about horror films (and tarot!) as well as shares vlogs on YouTube.

YoYo in Wickedland

If you love Halloween decor, horror movies and killer jewelry…YoYo is someone you definitely need to be following! Check out her Instagram and drop by her jewelry store, Wickedland.

Empressri had an amazing Halloween dress and flower crown which she wore in a Victorian setting. Posted May 17, 2020. You have to look close to see the Jack-O-Lanterns. It appears to be Vixen by Micheline Pitt. Of course I loved the photo’s taken in Michaels Crafts, I’ll be taking a trip there soon for some DIY supplies.
