Happy Halfoween, spooky little friends!
Each year around the end of April/beginning of May, the Halloween community celebrates the halfway mark to October 31st. Some celebrate it April 30, others on May 1. Personally, I like to mark it on May 2 because it’s exactly 26 weeks to Halloween. It also happens to be my birthday and, well, why not?
This year, I know planning for Halloween already looks and feels a little different – we’re unsure if we’ll be able to host large parties or take kiddos trick-or-treating. We’re not sure if stores will be filled with decor like normal. We’re all telling people to stay home, save Halloween…but will it be enough?
Here’s what I say to that:
Of course, Halloween will still happen!
One of the things I love about October 31 is…it is what YOU make of it. It can be scary or spooky or silly. And even if we’re quarantined or have to continue social distancing, it’s only for one year (hopefully) – just a blip on the radar when you think about how many Octobers we’ll have the privilege of celebrating in our lifetimes.
No matter what, we’ll make the most of it because the magic of Halloween isn’t in the jack-o-lanterns or haunted houses or bags of candy. It’s inside YOU. Don’t ever forget that. 🎃🖤✨
That said…let’s celebrate the halfway point to Halloween now!
How to celebrate Halfoween:
Try a new pumpkin recipe. I don’t know about you, but I always seem to have a few extra cans of pumpkin in my pantry. Looking for a recipe? This pumpkin bread is my all-time favorite, but I’ve also got suggestions here and here.

Make an easy DIY. Seriously, it doesn’t get any easier than this mason jar bat terrarium I made a few years ago. It’s one of my faves, and I’m betting you have the basic items already around your haunted house.

Find a costume in your closet. What pop culture character can you become using clothing you already own? I had a blast becoming Sabrina Spellman and then Aunt Hilda from “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” last fall. I’ve also done my own take on a black bat using items from my closet.

Clean out your Halloween stash. We ALL have a bit too much Halloween decor, don’t we? Why not spend a little time going through your collection and weeding out those ideas you don’t absolutely love to donate when we’re able to visit stores again?

Watch a horror movie. Um…Miranda. You hate horror movies. Well, my spooky little friend, let me tell you something: I think I’m coming around on them finally. My friend Matt assigned me this killer list of must-watch movies…and I’m slowly working my way through them. I even signed up for – gaspshock – Shudder!

Research Halloween cocktails. I love a good spooky cocktail and am always on the hunt for something new over on Pinterest. Candy corn moonshine is sounding just crazy enough to be worth a try right about now…you can also browse the recipes I’ve shared on Spooky Little Halloween.

Start a spooky playlist. My tip: pick a theme, then see how many songs you can find for it. Love vampires? Make an all-vampire song playlist. Dig songs with spooky bass groves? Make a playlist. Have a soft spot for a certain music genre? Make a…well, you get the idea. Check out my tips for creating a Halloween playlist if you need some help getting started.

Hello Miranda,
Happy Half-o-ween to you! I love to celebrate Half-o-ween in my own way. How? I celebrate it all May long. It’s kind of what I love to do in October for Halloween. One day or one week isn’t enough to me. I love to pick up a chilling podcast to listen to around night time. My podcast of choice is called Chilling Tales for Dark Nights. They have all these different voice narrators and heart pumping stories that were created by beginning and advanced horror writers. It gives me an idea of how old radio horror shows use to be on the air. Nothing is scarier than the imagination of the mind. And I love reading a good scary book. On my bookshelf is the collection of Grimm Fairy Tales and Edgar Allan Poe’s stories and poems.

Happy Halfoween! If ever we needed an excuse to celebrate, this is the time! Thanks for the John Carpenter film reminder. He’s my favourite horror movie maker.

Fabulously fun and festive list. I really appreciate and agree with what you said regarding the uncertainty that we’re facing with respect to how Halloween 2020 may look and play out. Even if some of our beloved activities are off the table or need to be altered according, the underlie heart and soul of a day we treasure immeasurably still remain and will, no doubt, bring an extraordinary amount of wholly welcome joy + positivity our way (not unlike the awesome six month countdown to All Hallows’ Eve itself).

Such a fun idea, Miranda! My daughter’s birthday is October 31st, so it’s always been an extra party on Halloween. I think I’ll surprise the family next year with a Halfoween. Thank you for sharing your ideas!

What a fun idea, Kelly!

I’m actually so bad about the count down to Halloween outside of October, that Half-o-ween usually passes me by. Irronically, I unintentionally end up watching a scary movie or a Halloween-themed movie. Like last year, I watched Goosebumps 2, and didn’t even realize it was halfway to Halloween that same day until later.
I feel like “find a costume in your closet” should be changed to start working on your costume! XD It feels like there’s never enough time to get those ambitious costumes thrown together no matter how early I try to plan. @_@
