Tips for Creating a Spooky Gallery Wall

Spending SO much time in my Halloween office lately has made me appreciate having this space to work in.

It’s also meant a LOT of hours staring at these walls…and realizing there are more blog posts to share than just giving you a tour. One of the top reasons I decided to turn my workspace into a Halloween haven is because I wanted to display all the amazing artwork I’ve collected on a spooky gallery wall. Today I’m sharing a few tips to help you create your own!

When it comes to decorating, do you feel like you don’t know where to begin? Seeing professionals transform a space from plain to perfectly decorated seems far fetched for some. However, anyone can redesign their space with a little guidance!

There is no rhyme or reason for how to decorate; decor ultimately reflects your personality and the things you cherish. If you’re looking to upgrade an area in your home completely, creating a gallery wall is the ideal solution. They serve as a focal point, add the best balance of character and style and are suitable anywhere. Read below for tips on how to assemble charm and decor at home!

Tips for Creating a Spooky Gallery Wall

Layout

Once you find an empty wall you want to decorate, plan a layout. You can pick a large blank wall, a corner, a hallway, or even a staircase wall. Pick a space that needs a little more liveliness. There are many ways to structure the layout as well. One approach includes taping easel paper on the walls and drawing where you want everything to go. Then, take it off the wall and refer to it as you assemble.

Another way is taping an outline on the floor, and organizing the pieces within. Before constructing, snap a photo to refer to as you recreate it on the actual wall. If you’re feeling confident, you can dive right into putting pieces up on the wall and move them around until you have it just right.

Colors

One of the critical factors in planning your gallery wall is having visual balance. The decor can be symmetrical or asymmetrical in design, however, maintain cohesiveness throughout with color. When viewing the initial layout, imagine a line down the middle of the gallery wall. By doing this, you will be able to understand balancing tones and colors easily.

For a Halloween-inspired gallery wall, you might pick black, white and gray, to be the primary tone throughout the decor. Then, sprinkle in some shades of orange and purple on each side of the invisible line to visually harmonize the gallery.

Photo Frames

After you’ve chosen the wall to decorate, decided on a layout, and selected the perfect color story, your next step is finding picture frames. With it being a gallery wall, the frames are the foundation of the overall design. Seek an array of photo frames in many different shapes, sizes and patterns. Incorporate some 4×7, 5×6, 8×10 inch frames, or even go bigger if your space allows.

Also, get creative with the shapes you use in your gallery wall given that picture frames don’t only come in rectangles. There are squares, circles, and many more unique types! While finding the right shapes may take some time, selecting the right colors shouldn’t be something to worry about. Luckily, if you don’t find the perfect colored frame online or in stores, you can spray paint the frames to be your desired color. So, if you find the shape and size you love but not the shade, you can repaint it. Then, print your favorite photos to display in the frames!

Signs

The next area of decor to incorporate into your gallery wall are signs; a name, quote, flag, image, or anything that’s representative of your life. This is one of the perfect areas to think outside the box with your decorations. Signs and decor pieces can showcase exactly who you are and the atmosphere you’re aiming to achieve.

For example, maybe the family name, an original quote, scripture, or just a saying you admire. Add a flag to show your heritage or the outline of the state you live in. For a Halloween theme, any Day Of The Dead references or spooky sayings will be perfect for your gallery wall, too.

Floating Shelves & Other Accents

Another item to consider using are floating shelves. They are a unique way to add dimension to your gallery wall. When planning your layout, have the shelves on either side and near the middle. Always keep balance in mind. Shelves open an opportunity for including decor items that aren’t able to be hung, too. For instance, a skull, pumpkins or gourds, figurines, plants, books, and more! It’s the best way to add more items to the area and differentiate the traditional picture-frame-only gallery wall we often see.

Another outlet to expand on accents is using washi tape. It’s a versatile way to add color, pattern, and texture to the wall. The washi tape can adorn frames, pumpkins, shelves, and wherever more balance is needed. Perfect for representing a spooky-Halloween theme!

When creating your gallery wall, stop and think about who you are. You want to incorporate every element of what you love into that one area. When you do this, the entire space will be completely transformed into the atmosphere you seek. Experiment with color, texture, shapes and themes until you have the best balance between all things you love and appreciate. Most importantly, keep it spooky all year long!

I’ve always been a fan of decorating asymmetrically. It feels like the best way to tell a story through your pieces by leading the eye. I’ve actually been going through getting our tiki pieces that need to be hung and it feels like the more mix-matched and varied in shape and size, the more attention is brought to it. The challenge is to make it in such a way that the eyes do follow a certain line. @_@

I’m loving your wall. So many great pieces and so much to be seen. :)

Don’t be afraid of non-traditional wall art! Our house is very “granny chic” and it’s a good mixture of both paintings and traditional hangings as well as stuff like amazing old area rugs, binoculars, etc whatever we felt fit our story. And I’m a personal fan of beautifully ugly art, don’t feel everything has to be “pinterest perfect”, if it just holds meaning to you rather than aesthetic beauty put it up! It’ll make you happy to see it.
