It's the second most wonderful time of the year: spooky Christmas season!
December blog posts are part of the 13 Days of Creepmas.
This marks my third year of putting my own Halloween spin on the holiday season, and it’s something I enjoy quite a bit. Growing up, Christmas and Halloween were neck and neck for my favorite holidays, and I chalk that up to how much we decorated for both. (Read more about that here.) So combining the two as an adult is something like a dream world for me.
But I’ll admit: if you run across me in real life at this time of year, I come off pretty Grinchy. Not to get too soap boxy, but I do not enjoy the hustle and bustle of the holiday season – it’s far too people-ly out there. I’m also not a fan of how pushy and entitled people get, seemingly blind to the entire point of this time of year: peace on Earth and goodwill towards all. And, if I’m completely honest, when I hit my 20s Christmas lost a lot of its magic for me, and I still can’t quite explain why.
See? Grinchy.
One of the few things that has made me fall back in love with this time of year is bringing a bit of Halloween fun into my holiday celebrations. Here are the three reasons I celebrate what I call Spooky Christmas these days.

Why I Celebrate Spooky Christmas
1. The winter holidays have a ton of creepy folklore.
From Krampus to Perchta and every creepy figure in between, our world is FULL of fantastic – and creepy – folklore during the holiday season. On the night of December 5, Krampus rounds up bad children and drowns them. Perchta arrives on Jan. 6 to also round up naughty kiddos. Norwegians hide their brooms on Christmas Eve for fear of witches and evil spirits descending on their homes. Oh, and don’t forget the tradition of telling ghost stories on Christmas Eve! Read more about creepy Christmas traditions.
2. I enjoy the challenge of Halloweenifying every holiday.
I grew up in a household where we decorated for nearly every holiday – from Halloween and Christmas down to Memorial and Flag Day. Having holiday decor out throughout the year feels like home to me. Since starting the blog, I’ve loved the opportunity to Halloweenify some of my favorite holidays whether it’s sharing Valentine’s Day ideas, pastel Halloween goodies in the spring, summerween or, of course, Spooky Christmas inspiration. Injecting Halloween into every part of the year is a fun challenge that keeps me excited.
3. Honestly, it makes me less Grinchy.
Like I said, somewhere in my early 20s Christmas lost all of it’s magic for me, and it became a time of year I didn’t look forward to. It felt more like a chore and something to get through rather than a time to celebrate the holidays with my friends and family.
Bringing Halloween into my own decor and celebrating in the last 2-3 years has gone a LONG way in me feeling less Grinchy. I love decorating a black Christmas tree, putting Santa hats on my pumpkins still leftover from October and having myself a spooky (and weird) little Christmas. And I’m all for doing what brings you joy because life is too short NOT to be enjoyed.

Hey Miranda,
I celebrate a spooky Christmas all December long because I am an avid Harry Potter collector. I love turning my home into Hogwarts at Christmastime. This year I’m setting out floating LED candles in my stairwell, spooky owl friends, and white pumpkins anywhere I can put them!

That’s so much fun, Kristen! About 10 years ago, I had a Harry Potter Christmas tree and loved it. :)

I wasn’t feeling Christmas this year. PHD hit pretty hard. I love Christmas but every time I saw Christmas things in the stores, I’d cringe. Then finally I got a black Christmas tree and threw some spooky thing on and I instantly started to feel better. I feel so much better when I am allowed to express my love for creepy things throughout other areas of my life.

Yay! Glad a bit of spooky Christmas is bringing you some holiday cheer this year, Kim!
