Spooky in the City: Inside Houston’s Tim Burton Art Show

?>

One of my favorite October traditions is stopping by our local Tim Burton art show in Houston.

All October posts are part of the Countdown to Halloween!

This year marked show #4 for “Burtonesque”, curated by Blue One Thirty, and after taking a year off I’m thrilled to see this event back. A little more about the show:

Tim Burton’s vision has influenced and challenged our imaginations for decades. He made us believe that there is magic at your fingertips. Please join us for our 4th year in celebrating his genius in film, art, and animation. Enter his dark and whimsical mind, expressed through the creative talent of artists from all over the world!

As a Tim Burton fan, I love wandering the gallery and taking in all the beautifully detailed pieces that get submitted for this themed show. It’s also been a little while since I’ve shared a Spooky in the City post – a series where I find local haunts in my hometown of Houston that make every day feel a little more like Halloween.

Here’s a little peek inside the 2019 show:

Burtonesque IV

I mean, is there anything more fun for Octob…urton than an art gallery full of Tim Burton-inspired art?

No, there is not.

Houston is lucky enough to be home to a Tim Burton art show in October - take a virtual tour of all the work inspired by our favorite Halloween lover!

I loved the piece on top – it was 3D and stunning in person.

Loved seeing so many pieces from my new friend Mark (aka Markee Shadows) in this show!

The Beetlejuice wall was my favorite. I’m obsessed with it this year! (Don’t believe me? Check out this post.)

I want a bouquet of those flowers across the bottom for the Spooky Little Apartment.

This was my favorite piece from the show, from Ms. Bitty Knacks.

The Beetlejuice and Lydia pieces on the right side had eyes that followed you – so cool!

There were several yarn art pieces from Zelda, but this Corpse bride was my favorite. So vibrant and detailed!

Meet Gabby Ramirez! Her Sally piece from the 2017 show was easily my favorite, and I have a print hanging in the Halloween office. (And I’m still wishing I would have bought the original…)

Her Sally piece (her favorite character, she told me) from this year’s show is in the middle of the trio she’s standing next to.

Eleanor Scissorhands – I loved this take on a classic, esp. the hair.

Another super cool piece. The slashes to the canvas are such a brilliant detail.

The headless horseman glowed in person. The blue was so vibrant and gorgeous.

Nicole and I stood around drooling over this stained glass piece from Michelle Pappas for quite a while. Absolutely beautiful.

Which piece is your favorite?

Share it in the comments! You can also check out photos from the 2017 show here and 2016 show here and here.

Happy haunting,

I like the Eleanor Scissorshand because it kinda reminds me of A Nightmare on Elm Street. Thanks for sharing the spooky art collection.

I just came across this, mine is the stained glass piece(last photo)! Thanks for sharing. I was unable to go since I live in NY so it was great to see so many of the other works. I also had a corpse bride piece (my favorite) but ups damaged the frame so I was told it was placed in the shop there. It was an honor to be a part of this display. My horror/Halloween works are always the most fun to create🎃💜
