As a writer, having a designated space for creating is important to me.

Growing up, it was my desk butted up to my bedroom window that looked out into the lush, green backyard. In college, it was whatever desk space I was granted. Post-college it was still that desk space, but the older I’ve gotten…the more I’ve found myself wanting an entire room – not just a corner – dedicated to creating.
So when my neighbor announced she was moving late last fall, I impatiently waited 12 hours before I contacted my landlord to ask if I could move.
Because I wanted that extra room to turn into a writing space.
It wasn’t the smoothest transition – or at least as smooth as I would have hoped – but the weekend before Christmas I made the long trek across the hall and my new home. It would take me another six months to get my writing space together as I reorganized my living space, purged items I no longer needed and waited for furniture my parents weren’t taking on their cross-country move.
But now that I’ve finished it…it’s my favorite space in my whole apartment.
And today I’m giving you a peek inside it!
My Halloween Office
AKA where all the Spooky Little Halloween blogging magic happens…

The extra room extends off my living room, and I love the French doors. Originally, it was sunroom in my 1910 bungalow. From this view, it looks like just another room in my grown-up teenage girl apartment.

But once you’re inside, it looks a little something like this!

The full 360-view!

Of course, I’m sure you, Halloween lover, want the lowdown on this space. Since starting Spooky Little Halloween, I’ve been collecting art prints that speak to me, but I never had a great place to put them.
While I whole-heartedly LOVE Halloween, I’m also one of those people who feels like it has a time and a place. I didn’t want to turn my whole living space into a Halloween wonderland all year.
But a single room? That I could handle. Trouble was I didn’t have one until I moved across the hall.

When putting together this room, I knew I wanted it to have touches of Halloween but I also needed to repurpose my existing furniture and color scheme. In a funny way, this room feels the MOST me: part spooky, part bursts of hot pink and navy.

I also put together a few DIY projects for my office. This bulletin board had been stuffed in my closet for years. It was originally offwhite and black paisley with pink ribbon. Using some of my Halloween fabric and candy corn ribbon I had on hand, I gave it a makeover using a bit of hot glue and a staple gun (which was a TON of fun to play with…).
This is one of my favorite things on the wall because there are SO many stickers and trinkets and notes from all the spooky friends I’ve met or stores I’ve shopped with over the years. It kind of tells the story of this Halloween adventure I’m on…

You might not know I started off my professional career in journalism. I’ve always hung on to my press passes to remember all the events I’ve attended and covered…and I’m doing the same in the Halloween world. I’ve been to Midsummer Scream twice now, Texas Haunters Convention and Comicpalooza.

Finally, a place to hang all my favorite spooky artwork! On the left, I had pieces from Drew Rausch, Dark Town Sally and Gabby Ramirez. On the right, pieces by Sam Heimer and Yosiell. For the life of me, I cannot remember the name of the artist the Sabrina print came from, but I picked it up at Comicpalooza.

And, of course, my piece de resistance: an original from the wonderful Matthew Woods.

My favorite spooky books, including all five we’ve read in the Spooky Little Book Club so far!

I like having easy access to a handful of Halloween decor all year long. I use random plates or banners or pumpkin pails for blog photo props. Before I moved, everything went into a plastic tote under the corner of my desk. But now…I have shelves and spooky storage bins!

And, of course, easy access to spooky office supplies. Have a ridiculous stash of Halloween washi tape like me? Here’s what to do with it.

I DIYed the inside of this box using Halloween scrapbook paper and Mod Podge. The box was from a set of bath products, and since it was already black it was perfect for storing my key office supplies. I painted the outside of these mason jars with acrylic paint to match my color scheme. Super simple!
P.S. How cute is my jack-0-lantern pineapple Hazel gave me at Midsummer Scream?

My office wouldn’t be complete without a glowing jack-o-lantern or two, plus those killer neon lights from the dollar section at Target. And this guy looked like he needed a spooky flower crown.

I also DIYed some cardboard magazine holders I originally used at work. The prints were pretty faded, but the boxes were still in decent condition, so I taped them up, recovered them with Halloween scrapbook paper and filled them with spooky paperwork. Both look brand new and are perfect on my shelves.

How I use my $3 fabric pails I can’t seem to stop buying at Target each year…Frankie here holds my business card treat bags I’ve premade for events.

What happens to all those Halloween cards y’all send me in my exchange each year. 😂 I have the BEST of intentions of doing a DIY project or two with some of them…someday…

I picked up these boxes from Joann last year because I loved the designs…and needed a little storage for Halloween decor. They fit perfectly on the shelf and contain a lot of the Beistle paper decorations I own and use for blog posts.

You can’t be a Halloween blogger without a year-round Halloween candy stash. 😉

Because I needed a little art on my shelf…and a clever way to display my Playbill and ticket from seeing “Beetlejuice: The Musical” earlier this year. It was also a great way to repurpose those silly cockroaches I bought for my Beetlejuice margarita I served at my Tim Burton-themed Halloweenie Roast.

I was thrilled to snag a Halloween flag from Rhode Montijo earlier this summer, and hanging it up in the corner of the office seemed like the only natural place for it.

My favorite place to read these days. On Sunday mornings, this is where I’m parked with a cup of coffee and whatever book I’m currently reading.

A little spooky, a little cutesy. It me!

I made this hat for my 2015 Halloween Roast, and since then I haven’t found a good place to display it…until I put together my office! I don’t use this lamp a ton, so it sits on top watching over my spooky creative space. You can see how I put together the hat (and suffered the WORST hot glue gun burn of my LIFE) over in this blog post.

One of the pieces of furniture I acquired from my parents was this cedar chest which sat at the foot of their bed for as long as I can remember. Having functional storage is invaluable when you live in a smaller space, so this chest is filled with a few larger board games and extra blankets and pillows.
On top? One of my newest Halloween books, my blogging notebook and this gorgeous planchette I picked up from The Glass Coffin last fall when Joey visited Thorn and Moon Magickal Market here in Houston.

Where all the blogging magic actually happens. I feel like it’s a lot less exciting and spooky than you’d probably expect…but I love being able to sit here, surrounded by windows, and work on blog posts and emails and zines. Short of the steps of my university’s library where I spent a LOT of time, this is one of my favorite places I’ve ever written.

The last bit of storage where I keep my craft stash, extra office supplies and camera equipment. The bookshelves are loaded up with every Goosebumps book my brother and I owned as kids (so grateful my dad stashed them away in the attic!), spooky reads, true crime and my parsed-down nonfiction collection.

And, of course, the top was begging for some spooky decor. My pumpkin pail stack was the perfect accent for this corner.

This batty was on a mirror I gave away earlier this summer, but the corner window of my office door looked like a good home for him!

And since I dismantled my Halloween bedroom in the move, my spooky sign from Kirkland’s has found a new home.

It gives me spooky vibes every time I see it.
And that, my friends, is my Halloween office!

Hey Miranda,
I love your office set up! That craft cabinet is to DIE for! Since I don’t really have a stable office space at the moment, for now, I’ll dream big and get inspiration from your blog!
I also have a soft-heart for saving cards and scrapbook paper. (I feel like they are too special to throw away!) If you’re like me, my suggestion would be to make pennant banners since you love using them in your décor so much.
You could cut out shapes from the artwork and string them up! For the little letters in the cards, I’d put them in a small binder. The idea is that you can look through all the little notes when you need to be reminded of how blessed you are; I call them Blessing Binders.
Hope this idea helps inspire you to repurpose all that fan mail!

Thanks Kristen – I LOVE your suggestions for the cards!

OMG I’m in love! Having a little creative (and ideally spooky…) den is definitely #GOALS. I do most of my writing on my couch, but now that I’m setting up my desk as a little sewing corner, I’m having fun dressing up the decor there and finding cute storage solutions for all the bits and bobs and notions that sewing entails.

I know whatever creative space you put together will be gorgeous – can’t wait to see it over on YOUR blog. :)

Wow, I LOVE it – thanks for going into so much detail! Lots of good ideas. I’m going to revisit this post a second time, for sure. :) Also – I am likewise in love with The Graveyard Book. What a gem! I can’t wait until my nephew gets old enough to share a copy with. I haven’t read all of your favorites in the spooky book display so I may take some reading tips for later from that particular photo.

Thanks Arachne! I’m so glad you enjoyed this post. :)

you are AMAZING!!!! I totally LOVE your writing space… And I love the above comments!!
Miranda | Spooky Little Halloween
Sure looks different from the last time you saw it, right? :)
Amy
I love this! I agree with you, I love Halloween but don’t want my home to be completely plastered with Halloween decor all year round, having one room dedicated to it is such a cool idea. I love the little DIY projects you’ve dotted around the office, and those French doors are fab! I’m currently saving my deposit for my own little house which I’ll hopefully be ready to buy next summer, I’m so excited to have my own space and get creative with the spooky decor!
Miranda | Spooky Little Halloween
How exciting, Amy! You’ll have to share what you do with your spooky space once you’re all settled. :)
Lisa
I”m seriously jealous that you have a room of your own to decorate! I just adore the flag.

It feels like a dream! So glad I had the chance to move across the hall and make this happen. :)
