Halloween New Wave: A Playlist

?>

Okay, so let's get one thing out of the way right from the start of this post.

I know I’m using the term “New Wave” very loosely to describe this collection of songs. Music purists will argue to the death that half – or most – of the bands I’ve included aren’t truly part of the New Wave genre.

They are right, and I’m okay being completely wrong.

You might know prior to starting Spooky Little Halloween, I lived in the music world as a blogger. And here’s the thing about music genres: they’re a bunch of marketing crap.

Yes, it’s convenient to group together like bands, slap a label on them and point to their music as defining a movement. But I also think a lot of genres and subgenres were once made up in the heads of rock critics who needed a clever way to describe the hot new band they were required to write about.

So when I say New Wave, it’s more of a sound I’m after than genre accuracy.

Okay, enough music snob chatter – let’s listen to some spooky tunes.

When I saw your playlist pop up on Spotify, I wasn’t sure what you meant by New Wave. And on mobile, it doesn’t really help you see what exactly is in the playlist. However, after reading your interpretation of “New Wave”, I completely agree with the selection as a whole. Personally, it’s not my favorite sound, but there are some solid favorites, Like “Don’t Fear the Reaper”. Plus there were quite a few I’d never heard before, so I really appreciate the new discoveries!

I’m a huge fan of Oingo Boingo and think they’re the best Halloween band ever. That being said, the best Halloween song, IMHO, is No One Lives Forever. Give a listen and I’m sure you’ll find it belongs on the list. :)
