Creepy Love Songs

?>

Valentine's Day is all fun and games until someone takes their love too far.

And who doesn’t need a few songs to celebrate creepy love this February 14? This Halloween lover certainly does!

It all started with “#1 Crush” by Garbage one afternoon last fall. The song came on the radio, and I started wondering how many creepy love songs are out there…and thinking how perfect those would those be for Valoween. (That’s Halloween Valentine’s Day, in case you didn’t know. And yes, it’s a THING.)

Since then, I’ve been working on putting together a playlist. Some songs you’ll find on other lists of creepy tunes about amour. Others came directly from you, my readers. (Thank you for your suggestions!)

But I hope every last one gives you the creeps and makes you look over your shoulder at your significant other…or secret admirers you didn’t know you had.

And just in case they don’t, I’ve shared my favorite creepy line from each song below.

Creepy Love Songs

Spotify is not your preferred method for streaming music? Here is the complete playlist so you can create it yourself:

My favorite lines from these creepy love songs:

Just because they don’t sound creepy doesn’t mean their lyrics aren’t! Each one of these made the cut for skirting the line between true love and unhealthy infatuation. Here are, in my opinion, the creepiest lines in each of these songs:

“Tonight You Belong to Me” by Patience and Prudence

I know you belong to somebody new, but tonight you belong to me

American Horror Story has kind of brainwashed me into finding older tunes creepy – this one especially since it’s used in the inaugural season of the show to set the mood in some of the more dramatic moments.

But the song itself is creepy when you pay attention to the lyrics. There’s something extra chilling about such a happy, peppy tune with lyrics about owning another human being.

“#1 Crush” by Garbage

You will believe in me, and I will never be ignored

It’s hard to pick a single line when the lyrics to this entire song are creepy as hell…but this one sounds more like a threat than a statement.

“Bad Things” by Jace Everett

I don’t know what you’ve done to me, but I know this much is true – I wanna do bad things with you

I’ve loved this song since it was featured in the credits of “True Blood” (and c’mon, what is creepier than those opening credits?). This lyric from the chorus always makes me feel like the singer has been put under a dangerous love spell he’s unable to break.

“Wicked Game” by Chris Isaak

What a wicked game you played to make me feel this way

If “Bad Things” is the song about falling under someone’s spell, “Wicked Game” is what happens when you come out of it. While not outright creepy, I’ve always felt like these lyrics speak to something more sinister than your run-of-the-mill broken heart.

“Scary Love” by The Neighbourhood

Your love is therapy, no drug can give me clarity as much as you do

This was a reader suggestion I hadn’t heard before but loved on first listen. Perhaps I’m a bit jaded, but depending on someone’s love to the point of describing it like a drug that gives you clarity seems preeeeeetty creepy to me…

“Ava Adore” by The Smashing Pumpkins

I’ll pull your crooked teeth, you’ll be perfect just like me. You’ll be a lover in my bed and a gun to my head.

Every last word in this song is stalkery to the max…and I love it.

“I Only Have Eyes for You” by The Flamingos

My love must be a kind of blind love, I can’t see anyone but you

This is another reader suggestion, and in the context of creepy love songs…it definitely fits the older-tunes-sound-pretty-stalkerish category.

“My Boy Builds Coffins” by Florence + the Machine

He’s made one for himself and one for me too, and one of these days he’ll make one for you

Really you could argue just the title of the song qualifies it to be creepy, but I especially love the lyric above. Another line that sounds more like a threat than an offer or promise.

“One Way or Another” by Blondie

I will drive past your house and if the lights are all down, I’ll see who’s around

Perhaps this scene from season 1 of “Veronica Mars” makes me feel like this song is creepy, but really…there are few songs about stalking someone better than this Blondie hit except for…

“Every Breath You Take” by The Police

Every word you say…I’ll be watching you

I resisted adding this song because it’s so obvious, but you can’t deny a classic. While the whole song qualifies for the creepiest of creepy love, to me there is something especially intense about promising to pay attention to someone’s every word. That’s commitment…and not the right kind.

“I Put a Spell on You” by Alice Smith

I put a spell on you because you’re mine, you better stop the things you do – I tell ya, I ain’t lyin’

There are SO many covers of this song originally by Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, but Alice Smith’s is one of my VERY favorites because the music is absolutely haunting. This lyric where the singer is exerting his/her power over their subject makes my skin crawl a little bit.

“Creep” by Radiohead

I don’t care if it hurts, I want to have control

I couldn’t believe this classic didn’t cross my mind early on when I started this playlist. Once you dig into those obsessive lyrics, you could easily translate this entire song to being about creepy love.

“The Horror of Our Love” by Ludo

I’ll fill the graveyards until I have you

I had a friend in college who loved Ludo, but I never learned their music. This was suggested by multiple readers, and I absolutely love it. (It may have also gone on my ultimate Halloween playlist because I loved it so much…)

Murdering the entire town until you have your lover puts it on this list.

“Psychotic Girl” by The Black Keys

I thought you would change, but I should have know you would play nice for a time and then you do me wrong

How many of us have been victim of THAT one in our lives? I love psychotic girl because on any given day…I feel like I could be on either side of these lyrics.

“In A Week” by Hozier

After the insects have made their claim I’d be home with you

Do you ever listen to bands without really paying attention to the lyrics? That’s true of this song for me – I never knew how dark it was…which made me love it even more. This tune is about a love that extends past death. It’s beautiful and tragic all at once.

“The Beast” by Concrete Blonde

Love is the ghost haunting your head

The entire chorus of this song is creepy, but I especially love this line. Love, or the idea of it, could totally be just a thought that haunts all of our heads, right?

“The Ghost Who Walks” by Karen Elson

He kissed her cheek but with a knife in his hand he plunged it in deep

This is easily one of my favorite songs to include on my Halloween playlists. The music is eerie from the start, and Karen’s voice sounds like a ghostly echo. But man, those lyrics get me every time.

“Got You (Where I Want You)” by The Flys

You sweet thing, tell me your sign, I’m dying here

Another reader suggestion! I think you could easily take the lyrics of this song in *ahem* another direction as to the intent behind it, but for my purposes, it’s fun to read it like the singer is trying to lure an unknowing lover into his lair for something more sinister than a night of pleasure.

“Six Feet Under” by Billie Eilish

Our love is six feet under

When you listen to songs about heartbreak you don’t always get ones about graveyards, which is why this new-to-me tune my Billie Eilish made the cut. (Okay, I also totally love that this is my song if her songs were zodiac signs too…)

“I Will Possess Your Heart” by Death Cab for Cutie

I long for this mirrored perspective when we’ll be lovers, lovers at last

My final pick is one that sums up that fine line between infatuation and obsession so well. I also love the double entendre of possessing someone’s heart…

I love “Possum Kingdom” by the Toadies, and although it’s much less …romantic, if that even applies… “Living Dead Girl” by Rob Zombie. Also, I’ve always found “White Wedding” by Billy Idol to be sexy-creepy, probably due to the video.

No Valloween song list is complete without I Love the Night and Nosferatu by Blue Oyster Cult and Love In The Midnight by Styx.

Awesome list! I love Wicked Game, especially, for how creepy it is. And I totally agree that some of those old classic songs are super stalker-ish!

Another super creepy one is The Recluse by Cursive. Here’s a link to the song on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/track/3hwbRqQLezmv5Yo2LITSnb

Wow! This is quite the list! I’m going to have to give it a better listen later, because some of your descriptions of the songs are downright hauntingly creepy. It’s not often that we look at this side of love and infatuation, but it’s totally works for Valoween. (And now I’m looking up Billie Eilish, because I’m pretty sure I’ve never heard any of her songs.)

Thanks for the great playlist. “Love Me Dead” by Ludo is perhaps my all-time fav.
