How to Make a Pumpkin Float

If you've been reading the blog for any amount of time, you know my feelings on pumpkin spice coffee drinks: they are NOT my favorite.

Not by a long shot. (I even tried one on Instagram Live a few weeks ago just to reconfirm that fact…)

That’s not to say I don’t love pumpkin during the fall, though. My mom’s pumpkin bread, which is featured in my fall Halloween zine (download it here), is one of my favorite treats, and I’ve never met a slice of pumpkin pie I didn’t like.

I’m always up for trying new pumpkin items, though, so when I spotted pumpkin cream soda at my local grocery store…I figured why not?

But then I got a crazy idea: why not turn it into an ice cream float?

And you know what? I actually LIKED it! Here’s how I made it.

Ingredients:

  • Pumpkin creme soda
  • Pumpkin ice cream
  • Whipped cream
  • Sprinkles
  • Mellowcreme pumpkins

Tools:

  • Mason jar or Halloween cup
  • Ice cream scoop
  • Halloween straws

Directions:

Step 1:

Fill your cup with pumpkin creme soda – no ice! One of our local grocery stores in Texas carries this during the fall, but you could also use a regular cream soda.

You may be able to find pumpkin sodas at stores like World Market or local old-time candy shops that carry unique items. And, of course, Amazon always has you covered.

Step 2:

Add a heaping scoop of pumpkin ice cream. This is also a specialty at a local grocery store (we love HEB in Texas!), but many brands, like Halo Top, make pumpkin ice cream or you might be able to buy a pint at your local ice cream shop. You could also try your hand at making your own!

Can’t locate any? Use vanilla instead – just make sure either the soda OR the ice cream is pumpkin to create this pumpkin float.

Step 3:

Top with whipped cream, Halloween sprinkles and a mellowcreme pumpkin!

Step 4:

Add a Halloween straw, sip and enjoy this sinfully sweet treat all season! (Or stockpile the ingredients to enjoy all year.)

Bonus:

If you want to make this even more sinful, add a splash of booze to your soda! Vanilla vodka totally calls to me with this concoction!

What would you add to your pumpkin float?

If you wanted to get REALLY crazy, you could add a ton of toppings like they do to Bloody Mary’s now (which I have a Halloweenified guide for!).

Would you throw candy corn or chopped up candy bars on top? Or what about a pumpkin cookie…or maybe even a slide of pumpkin pie? Get crazy and share what you’d add to your pumpkin float in the comments.

Happy haunting,

Girl, this is awesome! I’m running to HEB right now! I had no idea pumpkin creme soda existed. I’m going to top mine with sprinkles and crumbled pie crust.

Delicious eye candy! I might add white chocolate shavings.
