Welcome back to #TravelTuesday, a summer series on Spooky Little Halloween where we put a spooky twist on this popular hashtag and travel to haunted destinations across the globe.
This week, we welcome back Mr. and Mrs. Halloween! Last summer they took us to their old stomping grounds of Lawrenceville, Georgia. This year, let’s step inside one of the spookiest places in Los Angeles – Bearded Lady Vintage & Oddities – to learn more about their shop, The Mystic Museum and Slashback Video. Be sure to enter Mr. and Mrs. Halloween’s #HalloweeninJuly giveaway on Instagram too.

Queue up your favorite spooky playlist and grab a shopping bag because this Travel Tuesday, we’re hitting the road and giving you guys an inside look at one of our favorite destinations in LA!
This is no ordinary shopping trip though. This is a trip to a fascinating cabinet of curiosities unlike anything you’ve ever seen before.
That’s right, folks. We’re talking the odd, the peculiar, the macabre…don’t be afraid!
Step right up, and behold: The Mystic Museum!

First, let’s go back to how this place came into our lives.
We were hungry to explore when we first moved to LA, and naturally, wanted to get into something spooky.
In most parts of the country, you have to hold Halloween cravings in until late August or September when stores start filling their shelves with Halloween decor.
We soon discovered that there’s something special in Southern California for Halloween and horror fans: the Magnolia strip, a block on Magnolia Blvd in Burbank with stores that cater to those who keep things creepy all year.
One sunny summer day, we took a stroll down Magnolia Blvd to visit Halloweentown (a year-round Halloween store!) and came across a little shop, Bearded Lady Vintage & Oddities.
There were Halloween decorations in the window, so we knew we had stumbled onto the place for us.
Inside, we discovered rooms filled with treasures: spirit boards, coffins, tarot cards, art pieces, vintage Halloween decor… this place had it all!

Since then, Bearded Lady has expanded to include The Mystic Museum with rotating art exhibits, a gift shop, and events like fortune-telling, witchcraft classes, movie nights, seances, ghost investigations, and more.
We now make a trip to visit The Mystic Museum at least once a month, and for years, we’ve wanted to know more.
Who is responsible for bringing this glorious place into the world?
We had a little Q&A with owners Erick Wessell, Kiko Bailey, and Stephanie Joens to take a peek behind the curtain and reveal all the magic that goes on behind the scenes at The Mystic Museum.
Q&A:
Q: Bearded Lady Vintage & Oddities was one of the first shops we visited when we moved out to Los Angeles, and it really inspired us to pursue our passion for Halloween and the macabre.
Did you have a passion for Halloween growing up, and what inspired you to start the shop and curate such an impressive collection of curiosities?
A: We’ve always had a passion for Halloween and anything spooky. Halloween is a time of year where we finally feel normal! Also, the veil is at its thinnest for all the ghosts to come out and play. Opening up the shops made sense to us. We love this stuff, so should others. We wanted to cater to a community that we knew was out there that were like-minded to ourselves.

Q: Every time we visit, we notice so many new items and discover something special to purchase and add to our collection.
Where do you find treasures like these, and are there any strange stories that have come along with any of the items you’ve come across over the years?
A: Over the years people now know us as the Los Angeles Oddities store to bring their weird and curious items to. We do love the treasure hunt, but unfortunately, with running two shops now it’s very difficult to get out there. Honestly, there are SOOOO many items that have come and gone throughout the years that it’s so hard to pick a favorite. There has been so many spirit attachments to items that we grow fond of. Currently, we have a haunted Lamb (Leroy) in the Museum that was once owned by a little girl from the 1930’s.

Q: You recently expanded the store to include the breathtaking and must-see destination, The Mystic Museum! This month’s exhibit features pieces inspired by Tales from the Crypt and Goosebumps!
How do you choose the new themes for each exhibit?
A: Our ideas, again, come from our own personal love affair with the subjects we choose. If we love them…so will others! Community with the artists and fans has been incredibly vital to our growth. We love doing what we do!

Q: Part art installation, part gallery, Slashback Video was a nostalgia-fueled trip back to mom and pop video stores of the ‘80s and ‘90s that you featured last fall with Ryan Turek. We heard there are possible plans to take the show on the road. Any plans for a Slashback return at the Mystic Museum?
A: We are bringing the pop-up Slashback to Midsummer Scream Convention this July 28th-29th to view! It’ll be next to our booths Mystic Museum, Bearded Lady Vintage & Oddities, and Ryan’s Turek’s “Shockwaves” booth. We will be releasing a new secret announcement at the convention regarding Slashback!
Q: There’s always a new surprise in store for attendees when they plan a trip. What future plans do you have brewing that we can look forward to?
A: Our next exhibit is “Vampira introduces Shape of Water.” It’ll be a beautiful ode to the original horror queen and her infamous creature feature TV specials! Shape of Water embodies that beautiful creature nostalgia that we’ve missed so desperately. The Exhibit and Art Show opening reception is Saturday, July 14th 8pm-12am. We will have AWESOME photo ops and entertainment that night! We are always cooking up new ideas! Our Halloween season is definitely in for some tricks & treats. :)
Thank you, Erick, Kiko, and Stephanie!

What a fun and unique place to visit! I’ve never been to LA but this place will be at the top of my list when I finally make it there!
