Have you started planning your Halloween party yet? This is the time of year when I start getting the itch to work on DIY projects, plan menus and come up with costumes for my own annual Halloween party, Halloweenie Roast.
But before I do any of that? I put together a Halloween party mood board.
A WHAT?! you might be asking yourself.
So allow me to explain: each year I come up with a theme for my Halloween party. (Read more about why you should have one.) To organize my ideas, I use Pinterest to create party mood board. Over a period of several months, I save ideas related to my theme that I like or ideas that spark some inspiration. Then I use that board as my guide for planning my party.
It’s kind of like creating a mood board for your living room before you redesign it but for Halloween parties.
And today I’m going to teach you how to do it using a witches’ tea party as my theme.
How to create a Halloween party mood board:
The key to any good Halloween party is a killer theme. (Not sure how to come up with one? Check out my Killer Halloween Party e-course.) Once I’ve decided on that, it’s time to look for ideas!

Step 1: Create a secret board on Pinterest
I keep my board secret so I don’t have to worry about any of my party guests seeing the ideas I’m saving. I like surprising them with the little details of the party to bring the theme into every aspect of the evening.

Step 2: Search broadly
You’ll want to start by searching general terms, especially if you’re not sure what direction you want to take your theme. This will help you aggregate ideas you like.
The great thing about Pinterest is it will give you similar terms that are searched. (Google also does if you scroll to the bottom of the page and look for the related searches info.)
Here are a few of the terms I searched for my witches’ tea party:
- witches tea
- witches tea party
- witches tea party ideas
- witch recipes
- Halloween witch recipes
- witches brew
- witches tea decor
- witch favors
- black hat society
- tea cocktails
- tea party recipes
Don’t worry if the ideas or inspirations you’re saving aren’t similar – we’ll get to that later on.

Step 3: Get lost in your search…
I look for anything and everything when I’m idea hunting. Here are a few things you can search for to get lots of ideas:
- Invitations
- Recipes – sweet, savory and drinks
- Decor
- Favors
- Games or activities
- Party favors
- Artwork!
Artwork is one of my secret searches that you should totally swipe. I like looking for photos and graphics I can print out and use in frames at my parties.

Step 4: …and go wherever your searches lead you!
As you start looking for ideas, you’ll find seeing one thing sparks an idea for something completely unrelated. For example, I always struggle with finding fun activities or games for my (mostly) adult Halloween parties. As I searched for witches tea party ideas, I kept running across recipes for DIY tea blends.
And then inspiration struck! How fun would it be to have your guests create their own tea blend at the party to take home? So I started searching “how to make your own tea blends” to get ideas.

Step 5: Wait, then curate
Once I feel like I’ve gathered enough ideas, I usually walk away from them all for at least a week. That way, I have time to look at everything with fresh eyes. Then, I pare my mood board down to the stuff I absolutely LOVE. I eliminate similar items, look for decor and color trends and pick the best recipes. The above screenshot is what I ended up with for my witches tea party.
And below is a closer look at some of my curated content.
Here’s a quick glimpse at some of my favorite pins I would use for party inspiration:
- Witches Tea Party Invitation
- Sand Witches
- Floating Witch Hat Luminaries
- Maple Pumpkin Scones
- Vintage Witch Photo
- Witch Decor

I LOVE this idea! I’ll be creating a mood board, thank you! About a witches tea party – How would you make the theme sound appealing to the menfolk?

You could always do a witches and warlocks party…or open the theme up to any type of witch costumes. Hang with me on Facebook Live tonight (as you always do, I know!), and I’ll be sharing some more ideas about how to host this type of party. ;)

This is how I make all my party mood boards almost to a T! And as of lately, now that you can add sections to your main boards, I feel like I can customize it even more, like splitting up food, decor and stationary! I always feel like I struggle on theming with the food. I love to make the food match the party theme, but a lot of cute recipes are not often bulk friendly. :/ Like…making for 30+ guests. Most recipes will make maybe for 12 and it takes a while for just that or have a long prep time or really can’t be done the night before. I feel like I always get stuck compiling the food at the last minute and have little to no time to get myself ready! >.<;;;
