Let's make some spooky flower crowns! In my never-ending quest to turn every season into Halloween this year, I decided the perfect way to celebrate Springoween was by turning one of my favorite things a bit more sinister.

I’ve loved flower crowns since I was a little girl. I have a daisy crown my mom made me for a hippie costume I still use in my home decor to this day.
And they are SO easy to make.
In today’s DIY, I’ll show you my method for making them…plus a little spooky fun I had with some of my favorite blogging friends:

Here’s how to make your own spooky flower crown:

What you’ll need:
- Orange, purple and black silk flowers (or whatever Halloweeny colors you’d like!)
- Black floral wire (what I used
)
- Black floral tape
(what I used
)
- Wire cutters
- Optional add-ons, like ribbons and Halloween trinkets
How to make this Halloween DIY:

First, you’ll want to take your floral wire and wrap it around your head to measure how large to make your crown. Cut a little extra wire so you can secure the ends without making the diameter of your crown smaller.
While you could use a traditional floral wire, I like using larger gauge wire because it is more sturdy. If you use traditional wire, I recommend wrapping it around your head 2-3 times to reinforce it.

Once your wire is measured and cut, wrap the ends together to create your crown.
Floral wire is very pliable, so you may need to reshape your crown as you go along.

Then cover the wire wrap with floral tape to secure it and cover any sharp edges from cutting the wire.

Next, you’ll want to cut the flowers you’ll be using. I keep 3-4 inches of the stems to start with – I can always trim them down later, and it’s better to start with too much than not enough.
Before you start attaching your flowers, lay out the design you want. This will give you an idea of where to start attaching your flowers.

Then cut an 8- to 10-inch strip of floral tape and begin wrapping your first flower to the wire. Floral tape is stretchy, so it will go a long way. (I tend to use lots of tape to make sure everything is super secure.)
Fair warning: floral tape gets more sticky the longer you’ve been using it. You may want to wash your fingertips every so often while working with the tape. I find it I work with it for too long with sticky fingers, it is much harder to secure things.

One more tip for where to start: If you want your flowers to lay on top of each other, you’ll need work in the right direction.
For example, with the layout I have in the above photo, if I start with the orange rose at the top of the crown, I’d want to work counterclockwise around the crown to add my other flowers. If I went clockwise, I’d be trying to tape stems under the previous flower the whole way around…which is not easy.
(Also yes, this photo is from a different day of doing this DIY…hang tight – I’ll show you more on that in a minute!)

Just keep adding flowers until everything is on the crown! Then you can add other touches like…

Skulls! I decided this crown absolutely needed a skull in the dead center. (These skulls are very similar.) I also added in the black branchlike pieces.

I robbed my spiderwebs of all spiders for this guy. (But you can grab some here.)

And, of course, I added ribbons because in my world no flower crown is complete without ribbons.
This was actually the second spooky flower crown I made. In late March, Shelia hosted a blogger craft day at her house – thankfully everyone agreed to be my willing victim with Halloween crafts. I brought tons of supplies and myself, Shelia, Mandi and Laura made spooky flower crowns together:

They all turned out SO great, didn’t they?

Shelia used lots of black in hers, which I loved.

Laura’s crown = why you should always invite your artsy, Halloween-lovin’ buddy to the blogger craft day.

And Mandi did a beautiful job of incorporating in lots of greenery…but her final product may have been the spookiest in my opinion!

Spooky flower crowns in progress…

I don’t know how Laura fit all this on her crown!

But it was absolutely gorgeous when she was done!

Shelia was SUPER excited to celebrate Halloween early. ???? (She’s a killer costumer by the way…)

And here’s a close-up of Mandi’s – I love how she used the black branches.

Believe it or not, that’s genuine laughter.

Best ghoul gang ever! Thank you, ladies, for celebrating Springoween with me.
