Happy Bat Appreciation Day! While there are a lot of “social media” holidays, as I call them, that seem kind of silly…I love the idea of celebrating bats for a day. (Sorry, Mom…)
About this time of year (that’s mid-April if you happen to be reading at another time of the year), bats begin emerging from hibernation. If you live in a city that boasts a bat colony (like me!), you can head out around dusk to watch the colony emerge from their home each night.
Of course, as a Halloween lover, bats have a special place in my heart. I find them fascinating and love that they eat one of my worst summer enemies: mosquitoes. You can learn more about why bats are important from Bat Conservation International.
To celebrate Bat Appreciation Day, I’m sharing something a bit unconventional: bat recipes.
No, that’s not recipes using bat – these are bat-inspired recipes that are perfect for Halloween…or every day if you’re a spooky kid like me.
You’ll also want to head over to Holly’s Horrorland when you’re done reading here because she’s hosting a Bat Appreciation Day blog hop! See lots more fun bat-inspired blog posts at the link.

Pimento Cheese and Pumpernickel Sandwich
Pimento cheese is a Southern treat you should experience at least once in your life. I love this sandwich idea from Martha Stewart that uses a bat cookie cutter to create a bat-shaped sandwich.

These cheese ball bites are clever – and a little creepy – while also being insanely delicious.
Wonton Bats
These wonton bats are a bit of work, but they’d be such a fun addition to any Halloween party!

Aren’t those fun? I love that they’re a healthy option too!
Chelsea Celaya
I want that Blackberry cake or the pumpernickel sandwich! They both sound soooo good! I know we have a bat colony around where I live somewhere because a handful of farms that are off our road have some bat houses and I hear them at night. I’m really hoping once construction is done, we can get a house or two put up in our yard as well.
Miranda | Spooky Little Halloween
That is my dream – to have a house with bat houses instead of bird houses.
Chelsea Celaya
That is a noble dream. I love it!
