Guest Ghoul: How to Rock Spooky Style with The Sconnie Sling

?>

All October posts are part of the Countdown to Halloween!

Being a Halloween blogger is kind of my favorite, especially in blogging groups. In these circles, I’m the only one blogging about something as offbeat as a single holiday…all year long. It draws a lot of incredulous responses.

But it also draws out the fellow Halloweeners, like Penny Snark, aka The Sconnine Sling. We bumped into each other in a blogging Facebook group and were thrilled to discover the other loved Halloween too! (Plus, she’s from Wisconsin which is like my other, other home, so I like her extra.)

Penny has a great series on her blog this month called Glam Ghoul’s Guide. She’s also shared a ton of great Halloween content, like this pinkoween inspiration post which I love. The heart of her blog is fashion, and today she’s sharing a few ideas to keep your wardrobe spooky this month…and all year long!

How to Rock Spooky Style

By Penny Snark, The Sconnie Sling

As much as I enjoy decorating my house at Halloween time, there’s one thing that I love to decorate even more: myself! Part of the fun of the spooky season is showing off your Halloween love to the world. This year I’m participating in a 31 Days of Halloween challenge and trying to wear a Halloween-inspired outfit every day of the month, so I feel pretty well suited to sharing a few tips for getting your spooky style on!

Creepy color palettes

The first and easiest way to spook up your style is with the right color palette! You can’t go wrong with black, black, and more black, of course, and some orange never goes awry. But those aren’t the only Halloween colors – jewel tones like purple and scarlet or a jaunty yellow (just think of candy corn) are great to mix in too.

Spooky accessories

Accessories are a great way to add a little Halloween flair to your everyday look with as much (or as little) subtlety as you like. Add a printed infinity scarf, playful earrings, or some fun hosiery to your outfit – even something as simple as striped socks can have a witchy vibe! I love adding a spooky hair clip or enamel pin to my outfit.

Consider your Halloween motifs

I’m the kind of lady who happily wears a skirt covered in skeleton cowboys to work, but not everyone has the same level of comfort with novelty clothing. If you’re just dipping your toes in the spooky pond, you might want to experiment with more generally fall-themed items like autumn leaves and pumpkins. Ready to go Full Tilt Halloween? Go full steam ahead with witch hats, Jack O’Lanterns, and skulls!

Closet cosplays

One of my personal favorite ways to celebrate Halloween all month long is by wearing costumes…even when no one else knows I am! It can put a little extra pep in your step to go to school or work with the silent knowledge that you’re a witch or a member of the Avengers. A closet cosplay can be as simple as taking inspiration from a color scheme or as complicated as actually mirroring a favorite character’s look in pieces from your own wardrobe.

We all love Halloween, and I strongly believe in living out my Halloween fun as fully as possible – and that means showing off some spooky style throughout October! (And let’s be real, throughout the rest of the year too…) I hope these ideas inspire you to spook it up too!

Absolutely adorable! I love the orange sweater/plaid skirt combo. Like an Autumny Audrey Horne!

Yay, another spooky lady! Um hi, it appears we have a TON in common. Spooky, pastels?! I think we need to need to form a club of sorts specifically for spooky/halloween/alternative bloggers. Seriously.

I love it! Decorating yourself has to be the best. I mean, I might get a little too into the accessorizing for Halloween…I have over forty pairs of Halloween earrings…that’s more days than there are in October! It’s been a dream to pull off a Halloween outfit for every day of October for me and there are some great tips in here to manage that without having to create a whole entire new wardrobe that is only good for October time. I’m especially fond of the suggestion for creating a color palette-based wardrobe. There really are a lot of under-appreciated Halloween colors out there aside from the staple orange and black. In fact, sometimes I think it’s an even cooler challenge to take non-assuming Halloween colors and spookify them. ;) Like pastel pink.
