October 1 is my second favorite day of this spooky month. (I'm assuming you can guess which is my favorite. If not, take a look at where you are.) It marks the start of one of my favorite months of the year when, ideally, the leaves are falling, the days are growing shorter and the whole world seems to glow gold.
All October posts are part of the Countdown to Halloween!
It’s also the day a lot of really awesome people around the Internet kick off their Halloween offerings. One of those is Dead Air.
This used to be a once-a-year feature on radiodork.com where the station owner, Clay, would switch over to playing his favorite Halloween tunes. I lived for the moment the flip of the switch happened and I had a constant spooky soundtrack at my fingertips.
Thankfully, he’s just as big of a Halloween junkie as me and took his station year-round at the start of 2017. You can now listen to his gigantic collection of creepy songs 365 days a year at deadair.co. (Not a typo – there is no M at the end of the domain.)
I’ve pretty much listened to it non-stop all year long, usually while working on blog posts.
And today, I’m rounding up a few of my favorite Halloween songs I’ve discovered on Dead Air over the years and sharing them with you. Some are fun and silly. Others are creepy, and a few are downright weird. I hope you find a new spooky tune to love!
17 Halloween Songs I Love on Dead Air
“Black Cat” by Tommy Collins – It’s a fun little ditty that’s perfect for any Halloween playlist.
“Surfin’ Spooks” by The Ghastly Ones – As a girl who grew up loving The Beach Boys, any Halloween tune with a beachy vibe charms me.
“I Want to Bite Your Hand” by Gene Moss & Fred Rice – Parody songs of 60s classics I grew up listening to also charm the heck out of me, like this take on a Beatles classic.
“Halloween is Here” by Lonesome Wyatt and the Holy Spooks – This gem is a perfect mood-setter and great for kiddo party playlists too.
“The Voodoo Man” by Johnny Perry – This one is perfect for setting the mood of wandering through the swamps of Louisiana on Halloween night.
“Halloween” by Stephen Lynch – You definitely need to have a dark sense of humor to appreciate this one.
“Witches Brew” by Janie Jones – There’s just something about Janie’s voice that makes her sound like a witch…in the best way possible.
“The Ghost Who Walks” by Karen Elson – This one is dark and moody. Every time I hear it, I picture a ghost girl singing it. (Bonus points – this video is Karen herself performing it!)
“Devil’s Stompin’ Ground” by Southern Culture on the Skids – Need a rock tune for your playlist? This one is perfect.
“Get Down Goblin” by Jan Terri – A quirky, peppy kid-friendly tune you wouldn’t expect from someone who is beloved by Marilyn Manson. (I only recently learned that thanks to the guys at The Purple Stuff Podcast.)
“Witches’ Rave” by Jeff Buckley – I’m not entirely sure how I missed this song all these years because like every other early 00s O.C. loving emo kid, I adored his version of “Hallelujah”…but I’m sure glad I found it for my Halloween playlist!
“Halloween” by The Dream Syndicate – This one will definitely set the mood of a spooky day any time of the year.
“Actual Cannibal Shia Labeouf” by Rob Cantor – Are you ready for something totally random and weird? This song is it. It was featured on Dead Air’s guest post from 2015. To this day, it still amuses me.
“Re: Your Brains” by Jonathan Coulton – And while we’re on quirky and weird…this one is another favorite. The chorus had me in stitches the first time I heard it.
“Dead Girls of London” by Frank Zappa featuring Van Morrison – The chorus of this song was stuck in my head one morning last week when I woke up, so I decided to look it up to listen and get it out. I was blown away when I realized who this was by!
“Maddest Story Ever Told” from Spider Baby – This is by far my favorite song I’ve discovered from Dead Air…and it turns out its the opening credits of a movie!
“Raised by Bats” by Aurelio Voltaire – I am a very recent Voltaire convert. Earlier this summer I discovered his Gothic Homemaking show on YouTube after he visited a local oddity shop I follow on Instagram. Then I made the connection that I had heard a LOT of his music on Dead Air. This is easily my favorite.
And just in case you need a handy playlist of all of these…

Which song is your favorite?
There are so many more I could have chosen, but I decided to keep my list relatively short. I encourage you to bookmark Dead Air to enjoy all October – and all year – long!
Happy haunting,

Chelsea Celaya
I finally figured out how to get a direct link to DeadAir on my phone so I can automatically load it and have been listening what feels like non-stop since October 1st. Ironically, I think I’ve only heard two of the songs on your list on DeadAir! XD I’m loving DeadAir and going to them over choosing my own collection because of their variety. It’s amazing how many songs are on there that never crossed my mind to add to my collection. Of course, there’s still some repeats, but I’m greatly enjoying the listen. I also love the audio clips between the songs, what a great way to mix it up. :)

His collection is HUGE. I’m still hearing stuff now I haven’t heard at all in the past year, which delights me to no end. Glad you’re enjoying it too!

The Spider Baby one is great, and I love that film, too. I saved a few of these to listen to later, I am intrigued. I have a humongous Halloween playlist, but always looking for more!
