DIY Halloween Decoration: Witch Popcorn Jar

?>

This blog post is kind of silly for how simple it is. But I am a big fan of simple DIY projects for Halloween because there is a LOT going on in October in my world. (And as a fellow Halloween lover, I’m sure yours is the same.)

It’s a bonus when simply DIYs are also super cute.

I made these witch popcorn jars for Halloweenie Roast 2015, which was a Witches’ Ball theme. Everyone came in crazy witch hats – think royal wedding, Halloween style. They were the perfect addition to my decor and I put them together in under 20 minutes.

Ready to make one? Here’s how:

Supplies:

  • Card stock
  • Printer
  • Scissors
  • Apothecary jar
  • Popcorn (plain ol’ popping corn – not the microwave stuff)
  • Popcorn popper/microwave

Directions:

Gathering up your supplies will be the hardest part of this DIY. Any type of jar will do, really. I just happen to be obsessed with apothecary jars.

Most of mine have come from Michael’s, and I bought them using 40% off coupons so they were nearly half the price. For the record, I think you’re crazy if you buy anything at craft stores full price these days – everyone has sales or coupons on their apps! (Like that tip? See more of my secrets to doing Halloween on a budget!)

First step is to fill your apothecary jar 1/4 to 1/3 of the way full of popcorn. This is plain old popping corn – no salt, no butter. If you’re fancy and have an air or stove popper, use it to pop your corn according to the package directions.

Don’t have one? No problem – pour 1/3 cup of kernels in a microwave safe bowl, then top with a microwave safe plate. Place in microwave for 2-3 minutes, or pull it out when popping slows. Monitor it closely so you don’t have burnt popcorn – nothing is worse than that smell!

Now grab your spooky witch photos. I found both of these on a Google Images search. Since I wasn’t using them for commercial products, I printed them at home on card stock and cut them out.

Bend your photo slightly and wedge it into the popcorn. This may take a little finessing to get it to stand.

Eh voila! Witch popcorn jar. I told you it was so simple, it’s silly.
