I like that Halloween is only one day a year. Yes, we celebrate all year long here on Spooky Little Halloween, but if given the option to truly celebrate Halloween every day or one day, I'd pick one day for a very simple reason:
All October posts are part of the Countdown to Halloween!
It makes my Halloween traditions special!
Because what fun is a tradition if you do it any old day of the year? There’s something about the chill in the air, the turning of the leaves and the days growing shorter at this time of the year that make Halloween extra magical.
Growing up we had a few Halloween traditions. I’ve kept those going for myself as an adult…and added a few more.
By request, here are a few of my favorite Halloween traditions:

Decorating my home
My Halloween decorations typically go up in mid-September. I love filling my bedroom and living room with purple and orange lights and adding spooky touches to every room. (Not hard to do in 700 square feet!)
By the time I’m done, my apartment feels more like a creepy lair to me. I love coming home after work and turning on all my string lights, battery-operated candles and soaking in their dim glow while I write or watch TV. It makes life a little more magical.

Planning my costume
Homemade costumes are the way to go in my world. It ensures no one will have a costume just like yours, and I love thinking through all the details, then making them happen!
One of my recent favorites was Janet from Rocky Horror Picture Show – I had the best time collecting photos of her pink dress, then finding the perfect material and dress pattern, shoes, looking for a “Janet” necklace and even making her barrettes.

Planning my Halloween party
A big chunk of my time – and most of my Halloween – fun comes from planning Halloweenie Roast, my annual party, each fall. I love putting together invitations, dreaming up decor ideas and menus and then making it all happen – even if I eventually stress myself out over it. I love that my friends seem to enjoy it too.

Fall craft shows
From the beginning of September to the end of November, I spend a LOT of my weekends wandering local craft shows with my mom. It’s not exactly a Halloween tradition, per se, but it’s a tradition that goes with the Halloween season in my mind.
Plus, these craft shows are where I find a LOT of the one-of-a-kind jewelry I wear during October. My most recent favorite find is the silver pumpkin charm in the photo above. (For only $1!)

Carving pumpkins
If you’ve read any of my social media bios, you know I love pumpkin guts! I love the fresh smell of opening a pumpkin up. I love the feel of the guts squishing between my fingers. I love cleaning out the inside. It’s my favorite.
Enjoying the flickering grin of a jack-o-lantern is just the icing on the cake.

Watching “It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown”
This is one of my favorite traditions from childhood that I’ve carried over. It doesn’t feel like Halloween season until I’ve watched this one and hear Linus proclaim, “it won’t be long now!” It also makes me think of my dad because we always watched it together each October. (Now we text or email each other reminders.)
I’m excited we’ve passed this tradition on to my niece, who asked to watch “Char Bown” last time our whole family was together.

Enjoying creepy movies & a cocktail on Halloween night
I haven’t gotten to enjoy this one the last two years because my party has fallen on Halloween night, so I’m looking forward to it this year. I like finding a Halloween-themed cocktail to try and enjoy while watching something creepy – I usually go for super old school horror movies on Netflix.
I’ve got an extra fun cocktail in store for this year – taking suggestions on a movie!

My secret tradition
This is one tradition I mostly keep to myself. Years ago, a friend gifted me The Faeries Oracle for my birthday. They’re pretty complex cards for a novice, so I had a hard time getting a handle on them. But somewhere along the way, I learned how to do a past, present, future spread.
Halloween night has always felt like an appropriate time to reflect on the past year and look forward to a new year. As late as I can on Halloween night, I quietly pull out my deck and layout this spread. I enjoy it because it’s my own personal way to acknowledge my favorite night of the year.

Maybe you take kiddos trick-or-treating or go to a certain haunted house every October. Whatever it is, I would love to hear your favorite tradition in the comments!

I am so far behind on reading blogs! Love these. My favorite tradition has got to be going to get our pumpkins as a family and then making sure we’re all together to carve them. Then we ceremoniously carry them out to the front step, light them, then stand back and admire. Even tho she’s 19, my daughter is the one who was asking when we were going to do them!

That’s a great tradition! My family is like this about Christmas cookies. Maybe next year when my niece is just a bit older, we’ll do pumpkins all together!

I love your Halloween cocktail tradition! Usually Hubby cleans out the pumpkin and bakes the seeds while I carve. We decorate the driveway and put the candy cauldron there, then we sit in chairs at the end of the driveway to watch the fun. The kids are getting used to my life size Jason animatronic. One tiny princess said “Thank you, mr. robot!” last time. Hubs always makes mulled cider to enjoy during the spectacle. I know, I’m spoiled.
