A Rocky Horror Picture Show Halloweenie Roast

All October posts are part of the Countdown to Halloween!

Let’s do the time warp again! I fell in love with “Rocky Horror Picture Show” early on in college, and I’ll confess: it took me at least five times to completely understand what the heck was going on. (Or rather, understand it’s not really supposed to make sense – it’s just supposed to be a crazy, wild, musical ride.)

I wouldn’t call myself an aficionado, but I’m definitely a loyal Rocky fan. There have been rumors of remakes for years. When I found out Fox would be airing one, I was a little leery.

Do we really need an updated Rocky Horror? I asked. Isn’t the charm of the movie version that it’s seriously outdated and ridiculous?

Well, yes. But then I ran across this interview on YouTube:

It totally sold me.

If you’re interested in checking it out, “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” airs tonight on Fox at 8/7c…and by the way, this isn’t a sponsored post. Just sharing something I love. ????

And speaking of things I love…by now you know I love a good Halloween party. So to celebrate a re-imagined “Rocky Horror” hitting the airwaves tonight, I thought I’d share some photos from Halloweenie Roast 2013 which was, you guessed it, a Rocky Horror theme!

It’s just a jump to the left…

Invitations

So THIS was the year I went CRAZY over my invitations. I got super inspired on Pinterest and decided I needed to make a THING instead of just throwing up a Facebook invite.

This year’s invitations are about as fancy as I’ll ever get now, but here’s a peek inside the “Transylvania kits” I put together for my guests to set the tone for the party.

rhps-party-horn

First and foremost, I had to have party horns or noisemakers like all the Transylvanians do in the early scenes at the castle.

rhps-sunglasses

And crazy sunglasses.

rhps-bowties

Bow ties, definitely!

rhps-invitation-card

The invitation cards I made – and printed on pearl card stock as a small shout out to Dr. Frank-N-Furter’s pearls. That paper was just about the coolest find ever.

And then everything went in a box! Totally over the top, but I had a blast making these.

Party

rhps-sir-clayton1

If you haven’t heard the story before, this is Sir Clayton. I discovered him at At Home when it was still known as Garden Ridge. And, more than likely, he mismarked because he was only $18 instead of $80. He fit that year’s Harry Potter theme, so I grabbed him.

Every year since 2012, he has stood guard at the gate and welcomed my guests. I try to give him a theme-appropriate costume. What better for Rocky Horror than a red and black boa?

rhps-lights

The party lights around the bonfire are one of my fave pieces of party decor – and so ridiculously simple.

rhps-welcome

My fave Transylvanian posing under my convention sign I made to match the one from the movie.

frankfurter

Not bad, huh?

rhps-bonfire

And, of course, the bonfire for weenie and marshmallow roasting! Once everyone had their fill of food, we watched “Rocky Horror Picture Show” in the backyard projected on the back of the garage. I passed out props along with these instructions and drinking game (just for fun).

Newspaper, party hat, cards, toast…we pretty much had all the essentials!

Love that magically disappearing carpet.

rhps-props

A 100% trashed backyard, but we had so much fun doing it!

I even had a light-up globe to mimic the one at the end of the movie.

Sir Clayton at the end of the night. He definitely had too much Witches Brew that year…

Costumes

And, of course, no party would be complete without some killer costumes! Here are my fave Rocky Horror costumes my friends wore:

rhps-costumes-brad-janet

Daniel and Heather as Brad and Janet. (By the way, Heather is wearing one of the virgin pins I handed out to everyone who had never seen the movie!)

rhps-costume-transylvanian

Katie as a Transylvanian. Her tiny hat was my favorite touch.

Amanda: “I just know somebody wears a lab coat, so that’s what I wore!”

rhps-costume-frank-n-furter

Luis as Dr. Frank-N-Furter. (Slightly terrifying when you know he works in the medical industry! Haha)

Please note the virgin button. Going for Frank your first time? That is commitment, my friends!

rhps-costumes-props

Amanda dressed as the props. She always has THE most creative costume of the night.

rhps-costume-props2

I mean, the girl tied TOAST in her hair! You go big or go home when it comes to Halloweenie Roast costumes, guys. We don’t play around.

rhps-costumes-sweet-transvestites

Justin and Stacey, aka just a couple of sweet transvestites! Shockingly, this would only be the FIRST time my brother showed up to my party in a dress. Happened again last year too. (Look for the dueling Ursulas photo.)

rhps-costume-janet

And yours truly as Janet! I am so, so grateful I have an amazing mother who willingly makes me costumes still. I spray-painted an old purse from a high school dance, made my own hair barrettes so they match the movie exactly and even tracked down a “Janet” necklace on Etsy. No detail is too small for this spooky little girl.

And there’s my 2013 Rocky Horror-themed party!

Don’t dream it – be it,

OH. MY. GOD. I absolutely LOVE this!!

You’re not going to believe it, but on my drive home after work today I was thinking about a very small party I’m throwing in a couple weeks. I’m not a great party planner, but the theme is based on a movie we’re going to watch. Anyway, because of this very small party I’m throwing, I started thinking of future themes and since I’ve been thinking about Tim Curry a lot lately since I just found out he had a stroke back in 2013, so I decided that if I were to have another party that I could have a Rocky Horror Picture Show theme!! So perfect timing for me coming to your site :)

Oh wow! Loved the theme! The invite details were just so perfect! Even though Rocky Horror is a great Halloween movie, I also love it around New Year’s time. And your details would be so easy to collect together for a New Year’s Eve party!
