All October posts are part of the Countdown to Halloween!

Halloween can get expensive. Trust me, I know. So when you guys shared you wanted to see more budget-friendly DIYs on the site, I was excited to accept the challenge. As a result, I’m introducing a new series on the blog:

Halloween DIYs under $10

I’m looking forward to bring these to you, and I will keep them coming throughout the next year since, y’know, we do Halloween year-around here on Spooky Little Halloween.

So now any time you see a post with “DIY under $10” in the title or when you hit up this category, every single DIY project will cost you $10 or less. I will detail the costs so you can plan your own purchases…and so I hold myself accountable to staying under $10!

(The only exception will be this post since this DIY was made last Halloween, and I don’t have exact costs – estimated costs are at the end of the post.)

What DIY am I sharing today?

One you guys DEMANDED to see on Instagram:

Supplies:

  • White plastic cylinder container (or anything similar!)
  • Beans
  • Florals
  • Spider
  • Sharpie
  • Hot glue

Directions:

Find a white cylinder container for your ghost base. The one I used came from a cereal puff container for babies. (Thanks to my niece for eating these like crazy last fall!)

But you don’t have to stick with this specific container. Maybe your coffee creamer or large half and half bottle will work. Heck, you could even use a Pringles container or olive jar, and paint it white. Look in your fridge or pantry and get creative! Half the fun of this piece is being able to tell people what it was made using.

If you do end up painting something, white acrylic paint should do the trick. Be sure to allow it to dry. Then use a sharpie to draw on eyes and a mouth. They’re super simple that even those of us non-arts-and-crafts inclined can make them look good.

Then hot glue on your little spider guy, and let it set. You could use anything for this – a bat, pumpkin, another ghost. Or leave it off entirely! Totally up to you.

ghost-diy-beans

Once your base is ready, fill it up with beans! You could also use small rocks if you have them around the house or some of those gemstone fillers like I have in this apothecary jar.

I’m a firm believer in using what you have – esp. if no one is really going to see it. (And yes, I realize something ate my beans – I didn’t store this very well and will be replacing them as a result.)

Finally, arrange your florals! All the items in this arrangement came from the 99 Cents Only store in 2015. There’s five pieces total, and we didn’t cut them apart. We gathered everything together, then bent the stems to create the arrangement.

I really liked the branches with bats and the black leaves as opposed to more traditional flowers – it made it look more like a spooky ghost tree! Plus, that larger bat nestled in here is perfection.

Et voila! A super simple, super cute Halloween ghost decoration.

Mine currently resides in my office, but this would look great on a table as a centerpiece, tucked away on a large bookcase or as part of your spooky party decor.

Estimated Cost:

  • White container: free to me
  • Beans: $1 or less
  • Florals: $3-4 total
  • Spider: $1 or less (was part of a package we broke down for our witch hats last year)
  • Sharpie & hot glue: already owned

How to store it:

Don’t be like me and leave your display to the wild! If you don’t have a spot where you can store this as-is year-round, you can easily break it down until next Halloween.

  • Remove floral arrangement and wrap in tissue paper or a plastic bag – set in the top of a box so it doesn’t get crushed
  • Dump beans or filler you’ve used into a plastic bag and seal (get out as much air as possible)
  • Stick the base in the corner of a box – it might be great for holding smaller Halloween decor items for storage
