Want to know the secret to finding killer Halloween party ideas on Pinterest? Here are the 6 I use annually to create my Halloweenie Roast parties. | spookylittlehalloween.com

Searching Pinterest is a lot like thrift store shopping. There are two ways to do it: you either search the store high and low, looking for a very specific item you want, or you browse the store, wandering aimlessly and seeing what treasures you turn up.

From recipes and home decor ideas to memes and random tips, Pinterest can be overwhelming – especially if you’re hunting for things like Halloween party ideas. There’s endless content out there.

So how do you find what you’re looking for?

Spooky Little Halloween to the rescue!

I’ve been planning and hosting my Halloween parties longer than I’ve had a Pinterest account, and I can definitely tell a difference between a “before Pinterest” and an “after Pinterest” party. (So can all my Halloween helpers, who I put to work helping me execute all the crazy ideas I find…) My parties became a lot more detailed once Pinterest came along because I’d spend months curated secret boards of ideas.

By the way, if we aren’t Pinterest friends yet – let’s make that happen right now.

So how do I find exactly what I’m looking for?

Here are my 6 secrets to finding killer Halloween party ideas on Pinterest:

Secret #1: Pick a party theme

This is almost always where my Pinterest searches start. Since 2011, I’ve been assigning my Halloween parties a theme. I started with themes because I was trying to encourage costumes, but I’ve kept them going because it gives me somewhere easy to start with decor, cocktail, food and even activity ideas. A good theme will make finding specific and unique party ideas so much easier!

Secret #2: Search broadly

Start broad – very broad – and pin everything and anything that catches your eye. Don’t worry about editing yourself or only pinning ideas that actually look feasible. Don’t get boxed in by thinking you have to follow someone’s party plan to a T. A general search is just your starting point!

By pinning everything that catches your eye, you’re building a board of Halloween party ideas that will help you zero in on specifics. I know that sounds backward, but trust me on this.

Secret #3: Get lost in your search

As you’re doing your initial broad searches, let yourself get a little lost in the process. Allow yourself to go down some Internet rabbit holes – especially if it will broaden your search for ideas!

The year I threw a Dia de los Muertos-themed party, I found myself searching weddings for this theme – not just parties. No, I wasn’t planning a wedding but by going down the wedding rabbit hole on Pinterest, I ended up finding some gorgeous decor and color-scheme ideas that majorly influenced my Halloweenie Roast.

Keep repeating secrets #2 and #3 until you have a decent amount of ideas saved. I aim for at least 50 but usually end up closer to 100.

Secret #4: Search often

Pinterest may be the only social media site whose algorithms I love. Via the Smart Feed, Pinterest will start displaying new content for you based on what you’ve pinned recently. Lately, I’ve been pinning a lot of Halloween costume ideas, so I’m seeing a lot more costume ideas pop up. It recognizes that’s a personal interest and tries to display more content to me based on that interest.

Because of the Smart Feed, the more frequently you’re searching your party topic the more likely you are to start seeing a bigger variety of ideas. Let the Smart Feed work for you in this way!

Secret #5: Wait, then curate

Once I’ve done some initial searches for a party theme, I let my board sit for a few days. (Or sometimes a few weeks, depending on how early I started.)

Then I come back to the board and start to curate. You’ll start to see a trend in what you’ve saved. I delete any ideas or pieces of inspiration that don’t totally excite me or that I don’t absolutely love. This is also where I delete out ideas that I don’t think I’ll actually be able to accomplish.

For example, this past year I really wanted to buy a smoke machine and fill the backyard with low-lying fog to make it feel more spooky for my Witches’ Ball. After sorting through a bunch of ideas I pinned, researching costs and taking the amount of time I had into consideration…I ended up scrapping the idea completely.

Secret #6: Get specific

Once you’ve curated your board, you’ll see the themes or trends you’ve zeroed in on. Use those to seek out more specifics on your ideas.

Again using my 2015 Witches’ Ball theme as an example, I realized a lot of my pins related to creating a live witches brew and telling fortunes. As a result, I looked up herbs that might commonly be found in a witch’s store cabinet and how to do things like reading tea leaves.

Defining this level of detail is where you start to set your party apart from, “come over and drink beer” or creating an actual experience for your guests. (And I promise you’ll be surprised by how many of these are totally DIY-able for next to nothing.)
