Join my Halloween Book Club!

Do you love Halloween AND reading? Well then, hello new BFF! We are going to get along famously.

One of the many reasons I’ve always loved Halloween is it gives you the chance to dress up as anyone – or anything – you want. For one night, you could wander your neighborhood in any costume your spooky little heart desired and to me, there is something magical about being someone else for a night. Yup, I love a bit of healthy escapism.

But my very favorite way to do that has always been through books. If you’ve read my bio, you know I’m a bit of a bibliophile. I have 600+ books in my personal library housed across five very full bookshelves in the Spooky Little Apartment. (See them in my home tours.)

So when you’re a Halloween blogger, how do you combine your love of Halloween AND books?

With a Halloween book club, of course!

Earlier this year, I launched the Spooky Little Book Club, and I was thrilled when more than 200 of you joined within the first month. Seems like I’m not the only one who loves Halloween and reading!

So if you love both of these things too, consider this blog post your personal invitation to join us.

About the Spooky Little Book Club:

The Spooky Little Book Club was created by me, Miranda Enzor – aka the girl behind spookylittlehalloween.com – in February 2018 as a way for Halloween lovers to come together and also share their love of reading! We read fiction that ranges from the classics and novels that are spooky or supernatural to horror favorites and yes, even books set on or during Halloween season.

The Spooky Little Book Club is hosted in a Facebook group and is open to anyone in the world. We’d love for you to join us!

Not on Facebook? No problem! New reads will always be announced in my email newsletter and on my social media channels – in addition to Facebook, I’ll also announce the books on Twitter and Instagram on or around the start date of each season. Here is when each book will be announced annually:

  • Spring book: March 1
  • Summer book: June 1
  • Fall book: Sept. 1
  • Winter book: Dec. 1

Then keep an eye out for my review blog post of each book. In these reviews, I’ll include the discussion questions we answered in the book club. You can share your thoughts in the comments! Or share your thoughts as you read using the hashtag #spookylittlebookclub.

How the Spooky Little Book Club works:

We read one book each season (or quarter) – that means one book every three months during the calendar year. Our spring book is announced on March 1, summer on June 1, fall on Sept. 1 and winter on Dec. 1 each year. Each season is assigned a theme determined by me. (But I take suggestions!)

Approximately one month prior to the start of each book, I will put out a call for title recommendations in the group. This is your chance to nominate a book you want to read based on the upcoming theme! Novel suggestions are narrowed down to five by me, and then members have 2-3 weeks to vote for which book we read next.

Once the title is announced, members are given 4-6 weeks to read the chosen book. I will also give recommendations on how to find the book at no cost or minimal cost, plus purchase links in physical and digital formats if you prefer to buy your own copy.

When our reading period is done, I’ll post a series of discussion questions. Members are also encouraged to start their own discussions, share insights, etc. about the book. I do not tend to be a fast-paced reader myself, so I encourage you to take your time enjoying each book and jump into the discussion when you are ready. (Hey, life happens and sometimes you don’t always finish the book, right? That’s totally okay!)

Then…we do it all over again for the next theme!

What we’re reading:

The Spooky Little Book Club is still in its first year, but here is what we’ve read or are reading…and our upcoming themes through the end of 2018.

Spring 2018 | Theme: Classic – “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” by Washington Irving

Summer 2018 | Theme: Witches – “Practical Magic” by Alice Hoffman

Fall 2018 | Theme: Halloween – announced Sept. 1, 2018

Winter 2018 | Theme: Ghosts – announced Dec. 1, 2018

Next year’s themes will be announced in early 2019.

Missed a book? Feel free to give it a read and share your thoughts with the group anytime!

Want to join our Halloween book club?

We’d love to have you! Just head over to the group on Facebook and ask to join. All requests are approved within 2-4 hours, usually, but please allow up to 12 hours for approval. (I mean, I do sleep sometimes guys! 😉)

I look forward to reading Halloweeny books with you!

Happy haunting,

So happy to be a part of the club. Hopefully with Practical Magic I can participate more in the discussions this time! >.<;; Loved that you started it though! You're doing a great job with it.

I love this! Not only is it a great way to combine your two favorite things but it’s such a fun way to engage with others. A fun challenge to share with your fellow Halloween lovers!

What a great idea! I’ve never been in a book club before, probably because I leave so slow…but maybe audio? Can I be your book club member with a drinking problem?

Um, ABSOLUTELY. And audiobooks are absolutely welcome – we’re just starting “Practical Magic” by Alice Hoffman if you want to join us!

Tell your parents thanks, because you’re brilliant and they did the universe a solid. But seriously though, I love this idea.
