Halloween in the summer sounds like a dream, right? If only there was a place you could gather with fellow Halloweeners, explore haunts and buy Halloween goodies months before October even arrives…
There is, my spooky friends! And it’s called Midsummer Scream.
This Halloween festival debuted just last year as a way to celebrate everything Halloween, haunts and horror. It is held in Long Beach, California (I know, I know – California gets all the good Halloween stuff, right?) typically on the last weekend of July.
Yup, that’s this weekend!
I will be sitting on the social media sidelines for it, which I’ve been feeling pretty bummed about! Some of my favorite spooky friends, like Mr. and Mrs. Halloween and The Spooky Vegan, will be there to take it all in. I know I’ll be glued to their Instagram accounts, as well as the #midsummerscream hashtag, all weekend to get my fill.
Here are just a few of the things you’ll find to enjoy at Midsummer Scream:
- Panels and presentations, from a preview of this year’s Knott’s Scary Farm to revisiting Nickelodeon’s “Are You Afraid of the Dark?”
- Classes and workshops on everything from creating your own home haunt to how to have a Halloween wedding
- 14 mini haunts from attractions in southern California
- the Screaming Room, aka a chance to see original horror shorts from local filmmakers
- Performances from a vampire cabaret group, Zombie Joe’s Underground Theatre Group and a horror fashion show, just to name a few
- Escape rooms, virtual reality and other spooky immersive experiences…in case those mini haunts didn’t fulfill your needs
- Special guests including Tony Moran (aka Michael Myers from “Halloween”), Kane Hodder (aka Jason Voorhees from “Friday the 13th”) and even the Mistress of the Dark herself, Elvira aka Cassandra Peterson
- And, of course, an epic Saturday night Halloween party…in July!
Oh…and there’s also 200+ vendors and exhibitors on-site so you can shop for custom masks and costumes, spooky bath goodies and even take a sneak peek at this year’s Six Flags Fright Night and Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights!
Here are a few of my must-sees if you’re lucky enough to be attending Midsummer Scream this weekend:
I’m on a hunt for cute Halloween art, and The Art of Sketch delivers on that need 100%! Check out their booth for some fun – and spooky – original art for your home.
Bat in Your Belfry also delivers on that need I have for original art. Whether you need a little pop culture (Disney villains, Beetlejuice) or just some creepiness in your art, Michelle has you covered.
I was born in 1984, so by the time I was of-age to pick out my own Halloween costumes…Ben Cooper had closed up shop. I’m still getting a grasp on their history – and how very beloved they are in the Halloween community – which means a stop by their booth at Midsummer Scream would be a necessity!
Spooky enamel pins, creepy jewelry, Halloween hair accessories…Dulce Calaveritas has it all – and every last item is super unique.
If you follow me on Instagram, you know I find Ouija Boards really fascinating. (I’ve been posting some shots of my mom’s board from the 1960s since the spring.) So, naturally, I am in LOVE with Fiendies since their main focus in handcrafted Ouija Boards and planchettes! (They even have a custom one for Midsummer Scream!)
Looking for an edgy way to clean up your act? Hellflower Soap is just the biz to help you! I’ve always been in love with bath products and love checking out every new company I run across. If you want to pick me up a bar of Devil’s Night soap this weekend, I’d love you forever!
If you aren’t already following Kaci, aka the Homicidal Homemaker, you need to fix that right now. Her blog and YouTube channels are places I love to waste time as I go back through her archives to see all the amazing horror cooking creations she’s made. Be sure to stop by and say hi to her!
Seeing that my friends from Scented Screams would be at Midsummer Scream is what prompted this blog post. Their horror candles are second to none – I love my “This House is Clean” candle, which I burn in my apartment even though candles are outlawed. Drop by their booth, sniff their goods and tell ’em Spooky Little Halloween sent you!
I am obsessed with Sick Soap’s Haunted Mansion soap collection. Their unique layering style is what drew me into their company, and if let loose at their booth I would probably buy at least have their goods.
If you happen to be in the Long Beach area, you can still grab a ticket for this weekend! Midsummer Scream takes place Saturday, July 29 – Sunday, July 30 at the Long Beach Convention Center.
Looking for more exciting things to check out at Midsummer Scream?
The Spooky Vegan has you covered with her recommendations. As for me, I’m blocking out the final weekend of July 2018 now so I don’t miss another Midsummer Scream!
